PR Conferences: Which Are the Best?

By: Gini Dietrich | February 10, 2011 |

It’s video blog time! This week a real video instead of my Blair Witch Project-esque video of the Great Chicago Blizzard.

The Arment Dietrich Facebook question of the week comes from Erica Allison, founder of Allison Development Group.

She asks, “OK, because it’s on my mind and I’m planning my educational opps for the year, which two conferences are a MUST ATTEND for a PR pro working in social media? I’m a PRSA member and of course thinking I should head to Orlando in October. But what about the social media conferences? Social Slam? Others? Thanks!”

I have one not-to-be-missed conference in today’s video, but leave the second recommendation to you.

  • Happy Happy Birthday, to YOU, to YOU! Love the video and thanks for the super sweet, amazing compliments – so looking forward to meeting you in person! I’ve looked at the Academy Conference and thought it would be beneficial; thanks for the stamp of approval!! Looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to say as well. Now, go enjoy your DAY!

  • CarmenKrushas

    Gini. I think it is also important to go to events like DEMO (not b/c we are participating), simply because at these types of events you get to see the emerging technology that will help shape a PR team’s social efforts. To be in front of the trend helps to better understand what clients will need in the future. Oh and another very happy birthday to you, too! ***Heart***

  • ginidietrich

    @CarmenKrushas I was just reading your FB update. REALLY impressive! I’m nervous for you!!

  • ginidietrich

    @EricaAllison You should go! You should go!

  • CarmenKrushas

    @ginidietrich Thanks Gini! Im pretty nervous, too!

  • JackMonson

    Great topic Erica, and Happy Birthday Gini! Here’s a compiled list of 2011 PR and Social Media Conferences. Hope to see you at one or more of these:

  • ginidietrich

    @JackMonson You are the best! Thanks!

  • HowieSPM

    Wow I actually saw this as a Facebook post!!!! Like Oh My Gawd! Facebook sometimes works! On Thursdays. During odd numbered weeks. In the Winter. When it’s sunny out.

  • ginidietrich

    @HowieSPM Did you see it as Networked Blogs?!

  • HowieSPM

    @ginidietrich yes the URL is.

  • HowieSPM

    Happy Birthday Gini!!!!!! So glad Atlanta got some snow for your birthday. And yes @EricaAllison rocks so cool you chose her question. Luckily for me I am not in PR so Spin Sucks and @Shonali ‘s blog are my PR conferences going on year round. I do want to go to SXSW but if I had the $$ for that then I would have the money for the very important knowing one’s priorities!

  • ginidietrich

    @HowieSPM @EricaAllison @Shonali LOL! I think Shonali and I both will take being your conferences for the year!

  • ginidietrich

    @HowieSPM (and thank you!!)

  • 3HatsComm

    @HowieSPM It works?! *facepalm*

  • 3HatsComm

    Working on your b-day, @ginidietrich ?! What’s up with that? Kidding, enjoy your birthday. For Erica’s question I don’t have any suggestions but will be looking at the answers, see what others recommend.

  • @ginidietrich It popped up in my hyper alert as a Facebook/networked blog post…

  • @3HatsComm @ginidietrich Me, too!

  • @JackMonson Awesome list, Jack! Thanks so much!!

  • @ginidietrich @HowieSPM @EricaAllison HECK YEA YOU BETCHA AND ALL THAT JAZZ!!!!

  • @ginidietrich Happy birthday, again and again and again and again. 🙂 @EricaAllison I’ve found the last few PRSA conferences terrific and hope to make it to Orlando as well.

    A completely “different” kind of event – I can’t really call it a conference – that I personally got a lot out of was Ignite DC, organized by geoffliving and his cohorts. It’s like a mini-TED: 20 slides/5 minutes and you HAVE to stick to the format. The theme is not PR-related as such, but it’s very interesting and a great way to boost one’s presentation skills and ability to connect with an audience, which I think is a core part of PR. It also makes you pay attention to timing, story arc (h/t jillfoster ) and creativity.

    If there isn’t something like that in your area, why not organize it? I think that would be mucho cool.

  • @Shonali @ginidietrich geoffliving jillfoster Thanks, Shonali! We have a TEDx Asheville here, but I like that idea as well. Have heard of the Ignite DC conference and will check it out (hasn’t it already happened for this year?)…could be an option for the next.

  • @EricaAllison @ginidietrich I think they put on several through the year. The first Ignite DC of 2011 took place last week.

  • makarlin

    Happy Birthday (again)! Since I’ll be attending Blog World this year, that’s what gets my vote!

  • Happy Birthday Gini! Here’s my birthday present to you…

    Go get one… or two. 🙂 This is the birthday treat my wife and I share on our birthdays.

    Have a great day!

  • BobReed

    Counselors Academy, hands down! If you are a small to medium-sized agency, this event is a MUST attend.

  • Happy Birthday (or “Grattis” as we say here). Hope Mr D treats you to something fabulous.

    As for conferences, I wish the US was closer to Europe sometimes 🙂

  • lisagerber

    Counselors’ Academy gets another vote here. Cannot miss. I think part of what sets it apart is that we can find professional development everywhere – but the business side of our business is possibly the biggest challenge for a lot of us. And that, and the friends and networking, are what make it big for me.

  • bgindra

    I agree that Counselors Academy always provides lots of good learning and networking. If the question is about social media conferences, I think Blogworld provides the best learning. Not only because of content but because everyone there is SO into it. It is a conference of the most social media-immersed folks around. Last year I went directly from Blogworld to PRSA International and I was pretty dissapointed with the lack of energy around social at PRSA. Felt like a lot of the people there approached it as a “have to do” rather than a “want to do,” completely the opposite of Blogworld.

    Happy Happy Gini! Hard to imagine you won’t have a great day!

  • nateriggs

    Happy Birthday, Gini! Cheers! 🙂 I totally want to catch up with you at Blogworld if you end up going. Vegas + bloggers = great time.

    It’s not particularly a PR conference, but I feel like the SocialFresh events always draw good content, crowds of cool kids and they are pretty affordable. Also a bit more intement in terms of settings. The next one is later this month in Tampa (where it’s MUCH warmer than Columbus or Chicagoland) –

  • ginidietrich

    @nateriggs Thanks Nate! Looking forward to see YOU here next week!

  • ginidietrich

    @bgindra Are you going to Blogworld this year? If so, I’ll get to see you TWICE!!

  • ginidietrich

    @lisagerber And, well, that’s how WE met!

  • ginidietrich

    @jonbuscall Thanks Jon!

  • ginidietrich

    @BobReed Si, yes!

  • ginidietrich

    @T60Productions I am FOR SURE going to have a cupcake tonight!

  • ginidietrich

    @makarlin Am I going to have to go all the way to Vegas to see you?!

  • ginidietrich

    @3HatsComm I recorded the video last night. 🙂

  • bgindra

    @ginidietrich Haven’t missed it in 3 years, so YES! This is shaping up to be a terrific year. Isn’t it?

  • ginidietrich

    @bgindra OK. So let’s make a deal. Drinks on me in Vegas and drinks on you, well, in Vegas! 🙂
