It is funny the advice is to send a private form of communication when the issue was people publishing private conversations to the public. A little situational humor. The bottom line is that the platforms aren’t doing their due diligence when it comes to protecting the privacy of their members and of content that they are sharing. In the same way Google is accountable as a site if people post copyrighted info, I think we are going to see a demand for platforms to honor privacy. This is solvable but many platforms want your data pushed into public feeds so they can use it as well.

This is NOT true. If I post something from a private group and you are a Storify user not in that group and you see it, you now have access to that content. What am I missing here.

The guy is an ass and karma is a bitch. He will get his payback for not handling this well. I’m not sure what he thought he was gaining with his defensive responses.

Thanks for another reminder @allenmireles (because sadly, there can never be enough) that nothing is truly private on the internet. And kudos to the smarties that discovered this, wrote about it, and/or were quoted in this post.

Their reaction was totally knee jerk. And they managed to steer the story away from the original privacy flaw. It was badly played, all around.

We have long lived in a society that expected responsible production and responsible consumption. Court cases, regulations, and consumer choice consistently back up this culture. To ignore one and lay all accountability on the other is short-sighted. Bob’s advice was spot on. I truly wish that this had been taken as an opportunity rather than a miss. The benefit, nevertheless, was a reminder to be careful.

On the mark, allenmireles ! I was so frustrated that the reaction was all blame the user and no acceptance that the point of the original story was to expose a privacy flaw that people should be aware of. The completely unresponsive response from Herman was infuriating. And the fact that Storify is bypassing the API and, therefore, privacy settings, is pretty poor behavior, IMHO.

This was really interesting to watch unfold. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to learn the lesson yourself…and learn some patience before you understand the implications.
