We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Programming

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you some news.

I’m writing a book.

With Geoff Livingston.

Yes, the guy who dresses in drag.

But he only does it for charity, so he can’t be all that bad. Right?

The problem?

We can’t talk about our book.

Imagine that! Bloggers not able to write about what they’re doing.

It’s like cutting off our hands so we can’t type. Well, Geoff says he could type with his nose. So in this scenario, we’d have to cut off his nose, too.

We can tell you it’s not another social media book.

But rest assured, if you read Spin Sucks, you’ll find the book very useful. It’s geared toward you and what you do every day.

In our space, it seems like everyone is writing, or has written, a book. Or three.

But my mom very wisely reminded me that writing a book is a big deal in the real world. And I’ve wanted to write books since I was a kid (you should see my journals). But I’m also an author virgin so Geoff has very kindly agreed to show me the ropes.

Writing with Geoff is pretty exciting to me. Not only do I really like him, he’s smart, funny, and self-deprecating. I’ve been a long-time fan of his blog, where I successfully stalked him until he paid attention to me.

We’ve been working on the process since May and it’s been a great experience. Now, as we get down to the nitty gritty of writing every day, I can only hope we don’t kill one another and we make it to our book tour next summer. We’ve already agreed, that if things get tough, we’ll call a time out.

So there you have it. The book is due out next May. We’ll tour next summer. Our publisher is Pearson and our editor is Katherine Bull (who I adore).

And now I, too, have written the “I’m writing a book” blog post.

    How exciting! I think we all yearn to “write the book”…many of us talk about it, many of us dream about it, but few really hunker down to accomplish it. My brother wrote a book that was one of the top ten non-fiction books in Canada last year, and I watched him go through a 2-year research and writing process: agonizing! He worked with a well-respected publisher, and the book is in all the major bookstores and chains. I know that writing a book no longer requires that kind of timeframe, or full-time dedication. But I do know it’s not for the faint of heart., and requires unbelievable diligence, tenacity and discipline. Congratulations for doing what so many talk about doing, but simply never do. Cheers! 2. KevinVandever says:

    Happy writing!

  3. Al Smith says:

    Congratulations Gini. If you decide to write while riding your bike, please install a helmet cam, (with mic.) so I can LMAO. Also, don’t use too many big words, as I can’t find my thesaurus (T Rex).

    Seriously, I know it will be a great book. So glad to have connected with you recently. Appreciate all your great tips, ideas and humor. Best of luck and be careful riding. (and writing).

    Al

  4. MSchechter says:

    Finally, a reason to learn how to read!

    Very excited for you, even if it is Livingston that you’ve saddled yourself with (I tease, Geoff).

    Can’t wait to hear more and to actually read it (should be able to figure that bit out by tour time).

  5. JayDolan says:

    Wait, so I’m not going to be able to leave a snarky note in the comments of this booK?

    Well there goes all my fun.

  6. bdorman264 says:

    So, now that you have announced it, it must be so. That’s one way to get it done.

    I look forward to it; good luck.

  7. Congrats Gini 🙂 Love this. What is the ETA for the book?

  8. Great News Gini! Love it and can’t wait to read it. Now get back to writing your book instead of reading comments from Canadians.

  9. @MSchechter That’s why I’m buying the audiobook version, saves learning how to read 🙂

    @KDillabough Thank you! It’s helpful to have Geoff helping me…it’s a lot less stressful than I think for some. We both write everyday so it’s adding just another hour to our routines. Plus we both run businesses so we have to get this done and not let it affect our lives…minus the fun tour we have planned next summer.

  17. ginidietrich says:

    @Al Smith LOL, Al! I think I’m going to do the video from my bike this week. So you’ll get the best of both worlds. 🙂

  18. ginidietrich says:

    @John Falchetto @MSchechter See Shrek – John is so smart.

  19. ginidietrich says:

    @JayDolan Um. The back of the book? Maybe we can even convince Katherine to let you do a cartoon.

  20. ginidietrich says:

    @bdorman264 After I wrote this, I said, “It’s real now.”

  21. ginidietrich says:

    @John Falchetto HAHHAH! I don’t read the Canadian comments anyway.

  22. ginidietrich says:

    @M_Koehler Thank you, my oldest friend.

  23. JayDolan says:

    @ginidietrich You know you want me to do the cover artwork.

  24. faybiz says:

    I CAN”T WAIT- seriously.

    Now lady now

    you made my Sunday…

    just keep JB away from my copy- I don’t want any “the dog ate YOUR book” excuses…

  25. KevinVandever says:

    I doubt you’ll need it, but I’m happy to help wherever I can.

  26. margieclayman says:

    So you’re writing a book , if I like SpinSucks (and if I like you both most likely) I’ll like the book. And it’s due out next May. OK, here are my guesses…

    1. 87 ways to use Douchebag correctly in today’s online world

    2. Are you talking to me? A study of the online elite in the 21st century

    3. He Said, She Said – the book version remake of the Kevin Bacon movie (thus solidifying both of you as being within six degrees of Kevin Bacon – that’s a LONG tail PR campaign)

    4. How Spinning Classes Can Help You Lose Weight (and how you can blog at the same time)

    5. Get off the Road! A study of bikers and bloggers

    6. I dressed in drag and I liked it: the feminization of one male blogger (with illustrations from Gini Dietrich)

    Am i warm? 😀

    Seriously, congratulations to you both, but if you don’t include Northeast Ohio on your tour know that I will never talk to either of you again. Also I will inform your audiences that you smell of elderberries. And that’s ruthless, friends. Ruthless to the core.

  27. KevinVandever says:

    First words of advice, and you didn’t even have to call: Obtain a broader vocabulary than I seem to have today. I do know words other than ‘happy” to describe my joy for you and willingness to help if you ever need it…getting coffee now so that I can remember those words.

  28. Al Smith says:

    @ginidietrich@Al Awesome. Can’t wait. Be careful. Sounds exciting and Fun ! Woo Hoo !

  29. How awesome is THAT @ginidietrich@geofflivingston …I’ll be running over to his site next to take a peek. And, @margieclayman is right…being told you smell of elderberries IS ruthless…but if she says you smell elderly…well…frankly, it’s over 😉

  30. mollyblock says:

    No snark from me [unlike others who commented earlier 😉 ] . . . only a hearty expression of “congratulations!”

  31. lesmckeown says:

    Welcome to the tribe, Gini – big congrats.

    I must teach you the secret handshake.

  32. geoffliving says:

    @margieclayman It’s actually about the Winklevoss’s latest law suit, this time against Google+.

  33. geoffliving says:

    A to the men, and a hats off to someone else who gets how to produce work on a regular basis. @ginidietrich

  34. ryancox says:

    Very cool @ginidietrich ! So I guess I’ll have to settle for co-author of book #2.

  35. FrankDickinson says:

    Your writing a book with @geoffliving who? Oh, you mean the smartest guy on the interwebs!

    Very cool – two smart, wise and amazing people writing a book together – I can’t wait!

  36. EricaAllison says:

    Yay! Can’t wait!! Congrats and whatever it is you’re writing about, I look forward to it!

    BTW, you appeared in one of my dreams last night (I have several a night) and it was so real, it was surreal! 🙂 I told you I had been asked to run for a local office (City Council, I think) and you emphatically said, NO. WAY. Do not even think about it. LOL! Crazy…

  37. KDillabough says:

    @ginidietrich@John What did you just say????????

  38. marashorr says:

    Gini, congratulations! I can’t wait to hear more about it as the time gets closer. And you’re right, @KDillabough and @ginidietrich … I think we all secretly long to write a book, but few ever do. Go get ’em!

  39. annethewriter says:

    Congratulations! I feel your pain as I am in the final edits of my first book which will hopefully be launched this fall. Good luck with the process. You’ve won half the battle already…getting the publisher and an editor you love! I thoroughly enjoy your blogs so will wait with bated breath for the book.

    Anne 🙂

  40. KDillabough says:

    @marashorr@ginidietrich I will be writing the Canadian version:)

  41. marashorr says:

    @KDillabough As someone who spent a few years in Detroit, and because of that many, many evenings in Windsor enjoying the “only need to be 19 years old” drinking age, I suppose I can support that 🙂

  42. joelfortner03 says:

    Awesome news! Is it a pop-up book? I’m going to buy it anyway but if stuff pops up at me, I may by two so I have a backup. Congrats on this for real. I look forward to reading the foreword the tells how hard it was to write it, what you learned about yourself and you who must thank for helping you “get here,” in particular those who kept you fed. (cough, blueberry pumpkin pancakes, cough).

  43. joelfortner03 says:

  44. ginidietrich says:

    @faybiz I kept thinking, “Just hold your horses, Todd.” We’ve been working on it since May so I couldn’t wait to tell you!

  45. ginidietrich says:

    @margieclayman LMAO!!! Hey @geoffliving – I think we should have Margie write our subtitle. I’m partial to #1 and #6.

  46. ginidietrich says:

    @SocialMediaDDS Geoff is doing all the work – I’m just drawing the pictures.

  47. ginidietrich says:

    @mollyblock I kind of don’t know what to do with no snark. Thank you?

  48. ginidietrich says:

    @lesmckeown I was REALLY hoping you’d volunteer to do just that.

  49. ginidietrich says:

    @ryancox LOL!

  50. ginidietrich says:

    @FrankDickinson@geoffliving Well now, Frank, I wouldn’t go THAT far.

  51. ginidietrich says:

    @EricaAllison Funny thing is, that is EXACTLY what I would say to you!

  52. ginidietrich says:

    @marashorr Thank you!!

  53. ginidietrich says:

    @KDillabough@marashorr Can you translate it to Canadian for us? We were going to use Google translate, but I’d rather you do it.

  54. ginidietrich says:

    @annethewriter Thanks Anne! I may be venting to you in a couple of months, when we hit where you are now.

  55. ginidietrich says:

    @joelfortner03 It IS a pop-up book! Geoff is doing the writing (he rhymes better than I do) and I’m doing the pop-ups and drawings. (with real syrup, cough)

  56. @MSchechter That is one of the best blog comments of all time, sir!

  57. ginidietrich says:

    @JGoldsborough@MSchechter I personally liked The No. 2 Estate.

  58. ginidietrich says:

    @JayDolan OMG! Yes! Best idea ever!

  59. ginidietrich says:

    @KDillabough@John Except you, Kaarina. I read everything you write.

  65. In all seriousness, mucho congrats! ginidietrich , you and geofflivingston are two of the people who I’ve met through this thing called social media that I respect the most. If I hear the two of you are on any project, I know it will be successful. I don’t need to know anything else about it.

    In all not seriousness, I hope the book is about Google+ :).

    @ginidietrich@geoffliving What, you don’t thing Geoff is smart, wise and amazing? :O)

  69. faybiz says:

    @ginidietrich Thinking? You were emphatically responding- telepathically even.

    Glad you have the good news and I WILL be first in line!

    How much is this going to impact the day to day? hmmm… sounds like a post…

  70. faybiz says:

    @ginidietrich@EricaAllison She gives great advice even in YOUR dreams… Gertie, is there anything you can’t do?

  71. ginidietrich says:

    @JGoldsborough It’s not about Google+. It’s not about anything social. I’m totally changing our working title to The No. 2 Estate.

  72. ginidietrich says:

    @FrankDickinson@geoffliving I think he is all of that…but the smartest guy on the interwebs?!? He’s definitely the prettiest, as evidenced above.

  73. ginidietrich says:

    @faybiz I honestly don’t know that it will. We already have two chapters complete, which is 90% of our first deadline. I may be being naive, but it hasn’t been too bad, so far.

  74. ginidietrich says:

    @faybiz@EricaAllison Yes, I can’t play sports that require hand/eye coordination.

  75. KenMueller says:

    congrats! please please please make it scratch ‘n’ sniff!

  76. KenMueller says:

    congrats! please please please make it scratch ‘n’ sniff!

  77. ginidietrich says:

    @KenMueller Oh dang. OK. Let me see if I can get that added into some of the pop-ups. Do you have some favorite scents?

  78. EricaAllison says:

    @ginidietrich@faybiz No tennis? Ping Pong championships are out?

  79. KenMueller says:

    @ginidietrich well, you could each have your own signature scent. and maybe “Wet Jack Bauer”. “Sharpie” “Poop”

  80. KatherineBull says:

    Congrats to both of you, @ginidietrich ! It is going to be fun to work with you and @geoffliving !

  82. marashorr says:

    @ginidietrich@KDillabough Oh, I’m not fluent. Although I do love a good “AYE!”

  83. KatherineBull says:

    @ginidietrich

    Cartoons are A-Ok as long as nobody is naked or in drag.

  84. ginidietrich says:

    @KatherineBull@geoffliving It’s already been fun!

  85. ginidietrich says:

    @KatherineBull@geoffliving It’s already been fun!

  86. ginidietrich says:

    @KenMueller LOL! I have nothing smart to say to that.

    @KatherineBull Uh…did you not see the accompanying photo above?

  90. KatherineBull says:

    @ginidietrich@geoffliving

    You’re so right, of course! Have to watch my verb tenses. 🙂

  91. JayDolan says:

    @KatherineBull@ginidietrich All of the clothing on my stick figures is implied… don’t know if that counts as naked or not.

  92. KatherineBull says:

    @ginidietrich

    Yes. And that’s EXACTLY why I wrote that. Hahah.

  93. KDillabough says:

    @marashorr@ginidietrich We will edit that to an “eh” :))

  94. KDillabough says:

    @ginidietrich@marashorr I will love being the Canadianizer

  95. KDillabough says:

    @ginidietrich@John OK. You are forgiven:)))))

  96. marashorr says:

    @KDillabough@ginidietrich LOL… hey, I started off admitting I wasn’t fluent 😉

  97. John_Trader1 says:

    Wait a second, did the world just stop spinning? I think it may have with this news. Congratulations @ginidietrich – I am looking forward to reading it. And here I thought that Jake the quake and Irene were the lead stories of the week. Way to steal their thunder. Or vibration. Or wind gust.

  98. balemar says:

    I’m so excited about this! I can’t wait to see both of your names together in print!

  99. KDillabough says:

    @marashorr@ginidietrich LOL along with you:)

  100. barryrsilver says:

    I am sure it will be engaging and informative. I’m also looking forward to your posts from the road on your follow-up book tour. Consider taking copious notes on the tour. A book about a 1st time author’s tour might have some legs. Much luck, though luck has little to do with it.

  101. ginidietrich says:

    @barryrsilver THAT is a great idea! We actually have a fun (but short) tour planned for late June and early July. And blogging from the road will be done.

  102. ginidietrich says:

    @balemar I’m kinda excited about that, too!

  103. ginidietrich says:

    @balemar I’m kinda excited about that, too!

  104. ginidietrich says:

    @John_Trader1 Did you name the earthquake?! LOL!

  105. ginidietrich says:

    @John_Trader1 Did you name the earthquake?! LOL!

  106. 3HatsComm says:

    Heh Ken and Joel crack me up with the scratch n sniff, fill in the blank pop-up book silliness. Maybe y’all can and some puzzles or make it a coloring book? Kidding of course, congrats on be an official book author now. 🙂

  107. ginidietrich says:

    @3HatsComm Oh! Yes…we’ll add that in, too!

  108. John_Trader1 says:

    @ginidietrich I often have wondered why they don’t name earthquakes, but hurricanes get names. I suppose it’s because we know about hurricanes beforehand and quakes just happen. Earthquakes are identified by the place and date where they occur but does that exclude them from getting a name? Nevertheless, I have heard other east coast friends that were actually in the quake use Jake as the name and it stuck. Kind of like how we associate Spin Sucks with “community.”

  109. joelfortner03 says:

    @ginidietrich The engineering behind the pop-ups still baffles me to this day, even after working at a wind tunnel complex for 5 years. Hypersonic air flow into a scramjet propulsion system…don’t worry I gotcha covered…cardboard pop-ups of a fully set dining room table, family of 6 dressed to the nines and an unrealistically golden turkey….I’m freakin’ lost.

  110. FrankDickinson says:

    @ginidietrich@geoffliving Love the lips!

    (did I just say that?)

  111. Congrats @ginidietrich ! I guess by the powers of elimination we will be able to figure out what it will be about! I can’t wait. Have been dying to read your take on Underwater Basket Weaving! Awesome. (Just gonna insert a grrrrrrr because I hate cliffhangers and surprises. Now just tell me ok?)

  112. geoffliving says:

    @ginidietrich@margieclayman One is it. I’m till kind of hurt by the Winklevoss scrapping, though.

  113. geoffliving says:

    @JGoldsboroughginidietrich So many things I’d like to say to that last line, but out of respect to the mutual publisher 😉

  114. geoffliving says:

    @KatherineBull@ginidietrich Sup, with that? LoL.

  115. ginidietrich says:

    @Ameena Falchetto LOL! OK…you guessed it. It’s underwater basket weaving.

  116. @ginidietrich I knew it! Sign me up for the limited edition release … I want it signed 🙂

  117. ginidietrich says:

    @Ameena Falchetto Deal!

  118. ginidietrich says:

    @Ameena Falchetto P.S. Just read your blog post for tomorrow. Thank you for the perspective – can’t wait to share it!

  119. ginidietrich says:

  120. Yay! Congratulations, Gini and Geoff! I can’t wait to read it and for the book tour a palooza to begin! You need a roadie? 😉

    P.S. @KatherineBull is a whole lot of wonderful. What a powerhouse team!

  121. ginidietrich says:

    @WordsDoneWrite OMG! Yes, we’ll totally take you on as a roadie!

  122. mollyblock says:

    @ginidietrich That works. 🙂

  123. ginidietrich says:

    @joelfortner03 LOL!! That was hilarious!

  124. ginidietrich says:

    @EricaAllison@faybiz No tennis. No ping pong. No golf. No softball.

  125. lauraclick says:

    Clap! Clap! Clap! I’m standing up and applauding, Gini! I hope you can hear my cheers from Nashville. I’m really excited for you and can’t wait to hear more about your book and the entire process. Writing a book has always been a dream of mine as well, so I’m intensely curious about the process. I hope you’ll share that with us once you can.

    Until then, I’ll just be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for details. 😉

  126. KatherineBull says:

    Awww…. Thanks, Amber, for the huge vote of confidence!

    Wait, do I get to be a roadie too? I’ve always wanted to be a roadie.

  127. 3HatsComm says:

    @Ameena Falchetto @ginidietrich Maybe it’ll be a series, part 2 will be Underwater Fire Fighting. 😉

  128. patrickreyes says:

    Woohoo! Can you please come to Michigan for your book tour? If you do I’ll wear a Bears jersey when you visit!

  129. joelfortner03 says:

    @ginidietrich All that said, I’m excited for you, Gini. While there are millions upon millions of books out there, a book is special. Clearly you recognize that or you would not have ever even blogger about it. It’s not creating a new web site. I mean…it’s a book! It’s finite. You can hold it. And give it a friend. Good on you and Geoff for doing this.

  134. That is great Gini and Geoff! Can’t wait to read the book.

    And perhaps a blog post on the process is in order so you can educate us all on the pitfalls, do’s and don’ts!

    Cheers,Rajka

  135. jgwhitt says:

    Great!

  136. Debra_Ellis says:

    Congratulations Gini.

  137. Poor Geoff. Does he really know what he’s gotten himself into?

  138. adamtoporek says:

    Gini, so very cool! I will save the sarcasm for another post. 🙂 For this one, a sincere congratulations to you and @geoffliving !!!

  139. jeanniecw says:

    1. This IS a big deal, Ms. D.

    2. You picked an awesome collaborator. Geoff rocks, even in drag.

    3. Can’t wait to read it!

    CONGRATULATIONS.

  140. So very happy for you!!!! Can’t wait to get all the details and get my copy. I’ll be there at the NY stop of your tour! 🙂 Congrats!

  141. Cision says:

    Happy Monday to me! Congrats 🙂 Looking forward to reading it!

  143. C_Pappas says:

    To say I am psyched is a complete understatement but nonetheless I am. CONGRATS!! Cannot wait to buy a copy, read it, write a review about it, pass it around to everyone I know that can benefit from it and then add it to my reference collection. Congrats @ginidietrich (and @geoffliving). As long as you know that you have to include Toronto as part of your book tour when you do one so that all us fans in this part of the world can connect in person with you (again) and get you to autograph our books!!

  185. Lori says:

    Yay Gini – congratulations! You’re in for a heck of a ride! I’m nearing the end of mine and I’m SO glad! My son helped me to format it today and the edits are ALL BUT finished!

    A friend sent me a quote to the effect that writing a book is like being pregnant and editing it is like being in labour. I concur! LOL

    I’m looking forward to seeing what you write! All the best!

    Lori

  186. lauraclick says:

    @ginidietrich Thank you, Gini!!!! 🙂

  191. JohnnyRusso says:

    Gini and Geoff. Congrats. I cannot wait for that. But you can’t even share the title of book with us? Pretty please…. 🙂 And don’t forget Montreal right after Toronto on your book tour please…I know you have some friends here.

  192. ginidietrich says:

    @Lori I have to say, it’s been pretty painless so far. I’m bracing myself for the pain, but compared to the past year of trying to launch Spin Sucks Pro, this is CAKE.

  193. ginidietrich says:

    @martinwaxman Yes, you can! (and we won’t tell anyone you knew before this blog post ran)
