I must confess though, I’ve looked into DIYSEO for my readers, but haven’t really tested it out; just doesn’t seem like a robust enough tool to use.

My suggestion you need to learn the basics. If you want to do SEO, you need to learn about it; no question.

I do think it is important to point out that SEO is only about 10% of what HubSpot (our paid product) does. So the big takeaways for Nicole, I think, are using the tools to figure out where the site’s optimization is lacking, develop content that not only is interesting to their audiences, but also to the Google spiders, and using social media tools to enhance their awareness. But, I’ve had success by posting links that generate activity on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. Post links to your own website as well as others. You’ll generate more traffic. Google ranking will reflect the interest in your website.

Personally, I believe in a combination of keyword strategy, regular content creation (on a variety of channels all pointing at a blog), and a bit of SEO.

The WP-Scribe plugin has helped me improve my SEO writing, but I often find that community-optimized pieces that generate more response actually do as well in Google.

Bottom line: regular, best practice content creation will get you where you want to be.
