Good tools, Gini - although I don't REALLY think they'll help you with SEO that much.

I must confess though, I've looked into DIYSEO for my readers, but haven't really tested it out; just doesn't seem like a robust enough tool to use.

My suggestion you need to learn the basics. If you want to do SEO, you need to learn about it; no question.

Not to blow my own trumpet, but I offer a very nifty free report on SEO on my blog at http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/get-free-report/ - it'll teach your readers all the basics they ever wanted to learn about SEO and some.

Ana

Thanks for recommending HubSpot and Website Grader (our free tool). We really appreciate it!

If people are looking for more (free!) SEO education, I would recommend our free SEO Education Hub: http://www.hubspot.com/search-engine-optimization-marketing-hub/

There is also www.InboundMarketing.com which is a free marketing training and certification course.

I do think it is important to point out that SEO is only about 10% of what HubSpot (our paid product) does. HubSpot also includes marketing analytics, forms, landing pages, a content management system, blogging software, lead management, lead nurturing / drip email and email marketing. HubSpot is a complete marketing system, not just an SEO package, and is therefore quite different from DIYSEO (both in what it does and in the price). Over 3,100 businesses pay for HubSpot and on average they get 4.2 times more sales leads after 5 months.

All of you guys - thank you! So the big takeaways for Nicole, I think, are using the tools to figure out where the site's optimization is lacking, develop content that not only is interesting to their audiences, but also to the Google spiders, and using social media tools to enhance their awareness. And, I think we all agree that you don't necessarily have to pay an arm and a leg, if you want to spend some time understanding it yourself.

I make no guarantees that you'll climb to the top of Google. But, I've had success by posting links that generate activity on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. Post links to your own website as well as others. You'll generate more traffic. Google ranking will reflect the interest in your website.

@Gini, Some great thoughts, as always!
Personally, I believe in a combination of keyword strategy, regular content creation (on a variety of channels all pointing at a blog), and a bit of SEO.

The WP-Scribe plugin has helped me improve my SEO writing, but I often find that community-optimized pieces that generate more response actually do as well in Google.

Bottom line: regular, best practice content creation will get you where you want to be.
