5 Reasons I Should Get More Comments than Gini Dietrich

By: Guest | August 31, 2011 |

Today’s Coup de Blog is written by Michael Schechter .

Every day, Gini Dietrich leads you to believe that she is kind enough to provide others an opportunity to give their voice on this blog; to share in her audience.

This is a flat out lie. Having been a long time reader of Spin Sucks, there is one clear and, frankly, sinister intent for Gini’s so-called generosity… she gets to trounce us all in sheer volume of comments.

I know what you are thinking…“You don’t understand, she gives me something to think about every day” or even “I can’t tell you how many amazing people I’ve met through this blog.”

If you want to believe that, it’s fine, but you are playing the fool.

Take a moment and really think about what I am saying. What better social proof is there than allowing every voice, both big and small, to share in your platform and then utterly outshine them all in comments?

Gini is clearly using us all and I, for one, have had enough.

Today, I’m turning the tides. I am taking back the comments. Not just for myself, but for every guest blogger who has ever attempted to swing the bat here at Spin Sucks and has fallen short.

And here are five reasons why you should comment below and help my cause:

  1. Because I’m dumb enough to try: Wanting to take down Gini may seem like a stupid goal, but it is no small feat for someone who is just starting to work hard at capturing your attention. So share the last crazy thing you did in the comments below and help me reach my utterly petty goal!
  2. Because you already know Gini: There is no doubt that Gini has earned her comments and continues to earn them every day. But why not try something new? Get out of your comfort zone. Talk to me! You can talk to Gini every day if you want, not so true with the guests, so show them the love.
  3. Because David should beat Dietrich: We are always so focused on the big guys that we don’t give the poor underdogs enough credence. Sure, they need to earn their stripes, to stand outside of the house for three days before Tyler Durden lets them in, but you have to respect anyone who has enough of a screw loose to hit publish and share their thoughts. We need to help the little guys win; and the best rock in your slingshot is taking a minute or more out of your day to comment.
  4. Because Gini actually wants you to: Sure she is evil and all, but it is hard to deny that she is giving us a place to share our ideas. If I didn’t think that this was an absolutely horrid act of self-interest, I might be compelled to believe that she is trying to tell us something; that whoever is filling this spot is worth your attention. Lets face it, this opportunity could very well be the break they’ve been looking for. If they offer you value, take a second and comment on their thoughts.
  5. Because I need the encouragement: In all honesty, I am somewhat new at this. I’m trying hard, but not really getting enough feedback to know if I am heading in the right direction. You may say that not getting the feedback is a pretty good indication of how you are doing, but that isn’t entirely true. It takes a certain amount of critical mass and time to get the needed data. In the case of a new blog, every last bit of feedback is a drop of gold. You can help me, and bloggers like me, to get there faster through your honest input. So if you see potential, comment.

Don’t get me wrong, I know I need to be patient, I know I need to stop questioning Gini’s intentions in public, but going forward, let’s turn the tables on her. Take as much time as we currently spend with commenting on her words, if not more, on the words that she shares with us. Let’s make her ingenious plan to make herself look good backfire, and help a bunch of emerging (and in my case, clearly unappreciative) thinkers find their footing.

Agree? Disagree? That is all well and good, but it means nothing unless you take the time to add your comments below and help me take the first steps towards ending Gini’s reign of tyranny.

Do the same thing for whomever she is kind enough to share with you tomorrow. They may not deserve it yet either, but they could almost certainly use the boost.

Note: Special thanks to Marcus Sheridan whose awesomely petty comment on Twitter inspired this post!

You don't need help... You need a raise!

"Sure she is evil and all"; Made me chuckle hehe :)

Seriously though, a question: do you think LiveFyre has had a positive or negative effect on the commenting process?I've heard some very strong opinions from both sides and am going to be implementing it on my blog soon as I love the added features such as likes, listening, and profile linking in comments.

@Heathers invitations Hi Heather! We LOVE @livefyre . We think it improves the conversation and makes it easier for people to interact with each other rather than just a one-on-one with the author.

We also love the Twitter and FB integration, so any conversation happening on Twitter can be pulled into the comments here.

I was going to add a comment to support your mission...but then I saw you already had 542. You have gone from poor underdog to 'Comment God', and as such, in one short post, you have become 'The Man'...but not in the 'high five, I can't believe THAT woman gave you her number way', but in a 'Industrial Corporate suit wearing power broker way'.

Of course, you are now the enemy and I will be writing a blahg post about geting more comments than Michael Schechter. I will likely cast aspersions on your manhood and suggest you may not like bacon.

I will then send it to Gini, in the hopes she might publish it, and I can achieve my dream of being 'The Man' (either one).

In all seriousness though...fun post. Well done.

G'Day Michael,

Gini's nice to us: that's why. And ...like....I mean....well....look at the photo of Gini and the photo of you.

Not only that, but you claim affinity with that Marcus bloke who digs large holes in people's gardens, sticks a sheet of plastic in the holes, fills 'em with water and convinces the poor buggers that they're swimming pools and gets 'em to pay outlandish amounts of money for the trouble!

I'm now off to subscribe to your blog. I suspect that you've simply been misled by the company you keep. In the best Aussie tradition, you're worth a second chance.

You could even have a "Quantity not Quality Blog Comments Contest."

Just make sure you have fun,

Regards

Leon

@Leon I hear you on the photo, hell, I'm smart enough to not even have a picture of me on my own blog (cuts down on broken monitors worldwide).

As for Marcus, I know the pool thing is a sham, but I believe in the ole Lion. He set me on a fun little path here and showed up to support the nonsense. May even have him install a pool in my Brooklyn backyard (may need to be an inflatapool). While I am almost certainly not worth the chance, I hope you decide to stick around anyway!

As for the contest, not sure I could top this epic moment in time, but it may be fun to try.

@MSchechter I'm not sure that I have enough battery power to read ALL of these comments, but I'm about to try. Any algorithm in place to include the number of "likes"?

@ValerieSimon@MSchechter Don't worry, Valerie. You're not missing anything in the comments expect "Great comment" from Danny 125 times.

Anyone else think I deserve a "Social Proof" badge that reads "The Schmuck That Has The Most Comments On SpinSucks.com" for my blog?

I can't wait to read all of the comments tonight, but all I can say for now is this... VICTORY IS OURS!

@MSchechter I do think a victory speech is in order my friend. C'mon, thank all those people that made this day a reality. We're all waiting. :)

@Marcus_Sheridan Just back from a road trip for work! I shall be here to gloat in full later tonight! In the meantime... VICTORY!

43 people listening to this post and well over 400 comments. That's an average of over 10 comments per person. That is also a new Guinness record I believe. :)

@Marcus_Sheridan Wonder if it is an @livefyre record... We need @jennalanger ?

@MSchechter

wow, that's amazing! Sorry it's taken me a while to jump in, I've been travelling and all of the sudden I see another Gini blog post blowing up! Glad that @MSchechter is the reason for all the comments. Now @Marcus_Sheridan , maybe we should come up for a measurement of "conversation" instead of comments to know the real impact. What do you think? ;)

@jennalanger "Last month 1,146 sites installed Livefyre, and we expect to double that this month, along with a stable of world-class, top-tier publishers who will be rolling out Livefyre in the coming months to the tune of hundreds of millions of pageviews."

Whoa!

YES!

@jennalanger That would be the @dannybrown bump we received today. He has that kind of influence :)

@MSchechter "Meta" for sure. What's so awesome about this post is that it's STILL very active, when it was published yesterday. These are the kind of posts we love to see.

@jennalanger I rest assured in the fact that if this post and comments did not blow up the LiveFyre system - my blog is in good hands!

@MSchechter@Marcus_Sheridan You guys are close, but we do have some hockey fans that have live chats that regularly get from 1k to 2k comments...different use case, but you get the idea. Anyway, 500 is an amazing number, and even better if you think about the fact that it wasn't a live chat. Now is it ironic that a post about comments gets the most comments?

MSchechter
MSchechter

@jennalanger@Marcus_Sheridan Probably a wise idea, but from a strict volume standpoint, we've gotta be pretty up there in the all-time Livefyre comment records... I mean if we are going to keep this nonsense going, let us know what the official record is :)

I've come up with a resolution now that Schechter has dethroned the queen. For one week, Schechter gets a video in the sidebar, instead of Gini's. C'mon, not bad, right??

@Marcus_Sheridan I think I've already tarnished this blog's reputation enough... I'm going for my Social Proof badge :)

Ok, here is comment 443...and I might pitch in here and there to make this bigger (comment wise) than Gini's posts... happy? Do you think we should start a petition for this? Or did you already beat her?
