#FollowFriday: Howie Goldfarb

If you are a long-time reader of Spin Sucks, especially of the comments, today’s #FollowFriday needs no introduction.

Howie Goldfarb is a huge supporter of us here and always adds some fun, with some smarts, in the comments. In fact, it’s because of him that the comments get so lively at times.

Also known as SkyPulseMedia, or Chief Alien, Howie is one of the top five smartest people I know. Sometimes he leaves comments that I read and think, “I have to re-read this when my brain is fresh.” They’re always full of great wisdom, intelligent debate, and a sense of humor.

Don’t get me wrong…he’s incredibly opinionated. In fact, he just quit Facebook in a very public way (or the network that shall not be named) because he’s been disgusted with their privacy issues for as long as I’ve known him (a couple of years) and he joined Diaspora (which I’m still trying to figure out) instead.

He’s been banned from Mashable because they were tired of him debating every, minute detail (which is incredibly entertaining for the rest of us) and he has a great knack for pretending he doesn’t know who a single high-profile blogger is when others tweet or blog about them (which is also incredibly entertaining).

I’ve recently been invited more into his personal life and (I hope he doesn’t mind my telling you this) I’ve learned he has a super soft side.

He’s dating a woman who has a baby (not his) and I’ve been totally amazed at how much he’s in love with her child already. It’s really nice to see and to learn more about him, personally.

Professionally, he’s an advertising professional who really understands measuring results to the bottom line. He’s not a believer in throwing away half of your dollar to make the other half effective. He’s an advocate against ad impressions, which makes me love him even more. AND! He has an entire section on his website dedicated to cocktail recipes. Now you love him too, don’t you?

So, if you don’t already know Howie, check out his website, read his blog, follow him on Twitter, and, when Diaspora is out of alpha testing, you can follow him there.

I was on vacation last week when this came out (but still retweeted it!). Finally coming to comment!

Howie is yet another great individual I meet here on Spin Sucks (I really think at some point a SpinSucks meet up is required, @ginidietrich ). He is definitely a must follow! He can make you laugh, think, scratch your head in wonder and go WTF all in one post or tweet! LOL! He is a Islanders fan, but since they are no competition for the Blackhawks, I let that slide!

I'm a big fan of Howie's 1) because he's funny 2) because he brings me back to the internet days of old when there was fun to be had at others' expense.

Wow. Howie is one of those people that is so deep. He left the most thoughtful and interesting comment on my recent post about a pregnant homeless woman. We have great conversations on G+ and he really knows his music!

I have known about his softer side for a while now. Certain posts of mine bring it out in him.

He is a Giants fan, and that automatically makes him cool in my book. :)

He is also one of those guys that when he leaves a marketing/advertising comment I need to read it five times before it even begins to sink in.

Glad to see such a cool #Follow Friday!

Not a new one for me, I've enjoyed Howie's antics for quite a while as a regular reader of Spinsucks :)

I understand the Mashable criticism, they are definitely at a point where the relevance/value of the content to the reader is not the top priority. What do you think Howie?

Awesome.
His comments, without fail, evoke the reaction, "how does he come up with that?"

Back in the day, I used to have a feature called "This is not social media news, Mashable." This is making me think of bringing it back.

And are you trying to convince me to actually use Diaspora? That thing is a hot mess. It's like Linux. Only complete weirdos will use it day to day just to prove that they can.

Howie is one of the few people out there who is crankier than I am. I suspect that is because he roots for the Mets and has left the warm confines of Southern California.

If you couldn't find any thing else to like about Howie in order to follow his I have two suggestions:

1. His Twitter profile says he's located in the Andromeda Galaxy

and

2. On his blog, he is willing to barter for Space Daiquiri's

I'm sold!

I love Aliens, especially Howie! You're right, sometimes he says stuff that I have to re-read and go back to with a fresh brain! LOL! Too true. Such a great pick!

@JayDolan OMG! PLEASE bring it back! That would make my entire year! Please, please, please?

I'm not trying to convince you to use it (yet). It is a hot mess. I can't figure it out.

@TheJackB Oh you just reminded me I was interrupted when commenting on your blog post yesterday. I was very sorry to read about your brother-in-law. I'll head over there now.

@EricaAllison Right?! It can be the end of the day and I'll think, "Wow. I hope this makes sense in the morning." And then it does

@AllieRambles I wouldn't come here often, either, if I were you. They're all a bunch of nutcases.

@FrankDickinson exactly! I was going to say that - but I was worried about violating the commenting policy. Turns out, I could have said it. :)

@ginidietrich I'm in a debate with myself about bringing it back. On one hand, Mashable acknowledges that they cover more than social media news, on the other hand, I hate the godforsaken website and the terrible coverage and opinions they give.

@ginidietrich@JayDolan two summers ago when Diaspora announced their intent I was intrigued. Then of course G+ trumped them by moving faster. It is still in Alpha this the mess. I asked for an invite and got it and got @ginidietrich and @Danny Brown to check it out. The friends management is a lot like G+.

here are the two features I see of interest so far. I can publish to facebook, twitter and tumblr from Diaspora without having to physically go there similar to a twitter 3rd party app. And their first App is called Cubbie.s

Cubbie.s is a neat photo archive/curation app. If you see a photo you press Shift then right click and the photo is saved for you. Then you go to an album where they are all stored.

Yes jay bring back the feature!

@trontastic@ginidietrich@TheJackB and Angel's I did adopt them as my team along with the Clippers and Kings when I lived in LA 8) At least I am not a Yankee fan. And it isn't being cranky @TheJackB I have a Ph Imbalance in my head or my hair or something I forget which one but sometimes it has side affects making me slightly irritable.

@ginidietrich@AllieRambles which is why your blog has this after it on the AdAge list:

Spin Sucks *

* warning bunch of hooligans, nutcases, and rapscallions in the comment section.

@ginidietrich I'm going to have to lay out some very specific rules for myself. Don't want anyone getting terribly upset.

TheJackB

@HowieG@trontastic@ginidietrich I love the Angels, but that it is primarily because they are managed/coached by Ex-Dodgers. Have to agree with you about the Yankees- finest team money can buy. Still prefer the NL where they play real ball.

FrankDickinson

@HowieG@ginidietrich I'm totally with you on doing the bribes to get attention - even if it means Space Daiquiris or making fun of @Danny Brown 's kilt wearin' sheep herding.

Always love your commenting Howie - keeps me thinking and laughing!

Howie Goldfarb
Howie Goldfarb

@FrankDickinson@ginidietrich it is funny Frank while I might rant about some of the shady stuff in Advertising...bribes work. Granted they could impact your brand image under cutting the price to value perception...but sometimes you just have to suck it up and bribe customers for business or people or attention...everyone knows my scruples are fairly non-existent. Just hope you haggle for at least 2 space daiquiris.

@ginidietrich @HowieG I took the conservative road because I wasn't sure, but I feel it's lacking without it. LOL. I believe it is just no F bombs.

Lisa Gerber
Lisa Gerber

@ginidietrich @HowieG Oh! Are we allowed to sat shit here? Because I wanted my comment to be: " I don't know how he comes up with that shit."
