#FollowFriday: Michael Schechter

You might know Michael Schechter as the writer whose blog posts seem in your face, but are so out there they’re funny.

Take, for instance, last week. He wrote a guest post for Danny Brown called, “The Weird Thing I Want You to Do On My Blog,” where he talks about the trend of bloggers who monetize their work is equal to when they begin to suck. I kind of hope he’s wrong because we’ve been monetizing since last fall, but that’s neither here nor there.

His point is a good one and it caused A LOT of controversy. I mean, a lot.

His very first guest post for us, “Five Reasons I Lost Readers in 2010,” was so good that I ran it twice. It’s sarcastic and really funny, but it’s spot on, as well. As my friend Michael Stern always says, “It’s funny because it’s true.”

He’s humble and extremely giving. To illustrate both of those points, I direct you to Smarter Than I Am, where he quotes what people have said (both funny and brilliant quotes) who he believes are smarter than him.

The thing is? He’s wickedly smart. You have to be with his sense of humor.

And guess what? He’s not even a social media person. He’s the digital marketing director for his family’s business, Honora Pearls. He does social media, on the side, to really understand the parts of it that he can take back to his overall digital strategy. I love that.

When we were in New York for the conference that will no longer be named, he had an entire conversation with Molli Megasko about why wearing pearls doesn’t make you look innocent. Dude knows his stuff. I was ready to buy right then, right there.

So there you have it. Today’s #FollowFriday. Check Mike (or Shrek, as I call him) out on Twitter, Smarter Than I Am, and his blog. And definitely check out Honora. They have great gift ideas at all price levels for you guys. And for you girls? They have custom designing coming this month. I can’t wait for that!

Michael, just wanted to say congrats to you for making it on Gini's famous #FF list. Based on all I've seen from you in the last few weeks, plus the impression you have me in NYC, it's very well deserved. But be careful guy, that torrid pace of yours can be tough to keep up. Not everyone can be @ginidietrich ;-)

I wonder what today's fabulous parting gifts were for @MSchechter . Last week it was a bag of Funyons. The week before assorted grocery store coupons. The week before half a box of Franzia Chablis (still wondering how it was only half full), and the week before that it was a pack of @John Falchetto trading cards but I think last years edition.

Irreverent and insouciant always catch my eye.

Michael, who some have affectionally nicknamed Shrek is one of the few people I actually met offline before connecting online. Anyone who loves single malt deserves an FF for starters.

I agree with @NancyD68 although I already follow him, his tweets are protected. @mummyinprovence wanted to follow him (undoubtedly because of the pearls) and couldn't.

Twitter please free Michael!

Yes just like Mimi I feel very smart because I have followed him since New York last month..um that doesn't sound right.

I feel kinda smart because I started following Michael before Gini told me to. Let me just bask in this moment for a second...

I found his "controversial" post to be intelligent, honest, blunt and thought provoking--everything I like to find when I pop into social media conversations. What I didn't know was his background. How fascinating! I wish he would have been part of the conversation we had re: wearing pearls while vacuuming!

And, Gini. Your head, heart and instincts continue to be a huge inspiration to me!

@MSchechter is someone I have encountered digitally in some convoluted six degrees of separation way in the past....(is it just me or doesn't it seem that the more connections you make virtually, the harder it is to remember just exactly how/where/why you "met" them the first time?) Anyway, @ginidietrich, you hit another home run again in this recommendation. I am always attracted to virtual acquaintances who are humble, have a great sense of humor and tend to be a little self deprecating and @MSchechter seems to really fit that bill....and he is very smart and successful (and yes @hotwater911 I LOVE pearls *hint* ). Thank you!

Temporarily Honora-less Claudia

@HowieG @John Falchetto But I really had my heart set on those playing cards... oh well, will have to come up with some super fun uses for that stationary :)

@TheJackB I've always connected with the illegitimate and insipid... Actually love the word irreverent... think it is highly under used and highly under appreciated :)

@John Falchetto

Something wonky is going on, have never had my tweets protected... think it is stupid and smack people who do it regularly... Need to figure out WTF.

Kind of funny how we met off and then got to know each other online... certainly not the norm!

And for the record, you are very smart and I take full credit there :) Here's to a scotch sometime soon!

@MimiMeredith Utterly brilliant! Totally commend you. Happy to have provoked a thought! As for wearing pearls while vacuuming, my take is easy. Any occasion to wear them is a good one (as long as you have a good vacuum that isn't kicking dust into the stringing :) )

Amen on the last bit about that Gini character!

@MimiMeredith LOL!!! Hang on ... I'll finish my comment after basking.

Long enough? Great.

YOU definitely have to check out Honora. I love their stuff and I'm not a pearls wearer.

@ParkRidgeDDS I'm with you on the forgetful 6 degrees (damn my goldfish memory...). Thanks for the kind words and I am always happy to throw myself undera bus for a cheap laugh! Hope Hotwater got the hint :) Hopefully you wont be temporarily Honora-less for long :)

@MSchechter Damn Schechter you are beginning to make me wonder if we shared the same mohel. Insipid and illegitimate are landsmen. Maybe I am overtired, but I feel like I might have seen this conversation in an old issue of Mad Magazine.

@NancyD68 Gotta thank Gini for that :) Be sure to apologize to your BF on my behalf :)

@ginidietrich @MimiMeredithwho doesn't wear pearls when vacuuming? Though I am torn between the Black Fresh Water Pearls and the Japanese Akoya Pearls to go with my Vacuuming ensemble.

@TheJackB Nope, not overtired... All conversations about mohel's take place in old issues of Mad Magazine.

@MSchechter @John Falchetto I actually only drink single malt BUT I have wanted to do some pairings especially with Isle of Jura which is a really smokey single malt and pair it with some of the others. Maybe like a half and half I bet it would sink below whatever it was paired with but not sure.

@MSchechter @John Falchetto I normally mix Oban with the Balvenie on the rocks shake it good. Then add some Capri Sun Fruit Punch and a Maraschino Cherry. Isn't that how you drink it too?

@HowieG @NancyD68 Thanks Howie! We try... would love it if Nancy went into the store with the code JackBauer... they'd be so bloody confused :)

@MSchechter @NancyD68 Nancy make sure you give your BF that 75% off special promo code JACKBAUER at least I think it still works ;-)

Nice jewelry Michael from perusing your site!

@HowieG @ginidietrich I'm really, really impressed that you have given this so much thought. And the mental image your comment created is just darling.
