#FollowFriday: Paula Kiger

By: Gini Dietrich | May 31, 2013 |

#FollowFriday-Paula KigerIt’s Friday already, which means you get to meet another member of our community.

I first met Paula Kiger on Twitter as Big Green Pen (turns out, that’s her favorite color pen to use). We’ve been chatting there for a while, but she’s a recent addition to the Spin Sucks community.

In fact, she’s one of the few who follows the rules on The Three Things every Sunday and provides us with an article, podcast, or video in exchange for our three links. We love that!

She lives in Tallahassee, is the mother of two, a wife, a runner, a blogger, holds two degrees, a writer, a reader, a proofreader, holds book club at the women’s prison, and has been instrumental in taking Florida Healthy Kids Corporation from fledgling to a real program that helps uninsured kids.

Most recently, she participated in a big farewell to the ABC affiliate’s weatherman, who is moving to Memphis to work for the affiliate there, which I find really fun and interesting. I’m pretty sure if an anchor left Chicago, no one would notice, but this community is sad to see Sean Parker go.

I mentioned she is a runner. She participates in #RunChat and proudly displays her mileage and time every day in the sidebar of her blog. She also posts both to Facebook every day, which is both inspiring and motivating.

If you read her blog, you’ll find everything from writing techniques she’s learned at writer’s conferences, book reviews, images from her runs, thoughts on every day occurrences (which she manages to make interesting), and even a video of her singing (trying to keep up with Chuck Kent, she is).

As you can tell, she’s no slouch, she’s fun to have around, and she offers each of you something a little bit different than the everyday PR and marketing. You can learn quite a bit from her journey through writing and definitely will be inspired to put on your running shoes and get out the door.

You can find her on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Big Green Pen, her blog.

  • Well, here I sit at a rare loss for words. Thank you for this; thank you for welcoming me and my non-PR-centric self into the community. The thing about the “weatherman goodbye” is that Sean exemplified everything that is right about using social media — by interacting with us viewers over social media, he got us interested in weather (beyond the “please tell me it won’t rain on my picnic tomorrow” interest) and got viewers talking to one another as well as to him. I hope I do just a little of that with my social media presence too. Gracias, again.

    • biggreenpen And you’re up early! I haven’t even had a chance to share this on your FB wall yet!

      • ginidietrich biggreenpen Almost always with the up early thing!

        • biggreenpen ginidietrich OMG do it Gini! Post it on her wall. That will teach her a lesson!

    • biggreenpen Good communities encourage diversity. We learn more from each other that way…it’s like a liberal arts education. Even though I’m in PR, I also blog about traveling to unexotic locales and condo gardening. We need to be well-rounded, right? Congrats on #FF!

      • Word Ninja biggreenpen Dig this comment, couldn’t agree more

        • JoeCardillo Word Ninja biggreenpen Cool, someone else who says “dig”!

        • Word Ninja JoeCardillo biggreenpen OMG you guys – since you brought up “dig,” was it a coincidence or had you seen my “song” (quotes deserved because it wasn’t very lyrical) that I sang for/to Chuck?

        • biggreenpen Word Ninja JoeCardillo HA! Coincidence on my part. I’ve been using that outdated phrase for years. Waiting for it to come back. Maybe it did and I missed it?

      • Word Ninja biggreenpen you two need to have a writing implement fight to the death for sure! Right ginidietrich ? We can do one of those livefyre blog days. Take bets…..well Farmville money at the least.

        • Howie Goldfarb Word Ninja biggreenpen ginidietrich livefyre That’s brilliant! But she seems pretty nice, not sure I could go all black belt (black pen?) on her.

        • Word Ninja Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich livefyre Ooh – let’s do a collaboration instead of a fight. Haiku-a-thon or something. 🙂

  • i love paula. already friends on FB and she’s great with the like button. hi paula!

    • KenMueller Hi Ken! Or Mr. Potato-face. Which do you prefer?

      • biggreenpen i put the potato into semi-retirement…

  • YAY! Someone new. Hi Paula! Congrats. Welcome to the club. Connecting now.

  • Well, she has to be good if she is from T-town, home of the Florida State Seminoles…:).
Very impressive, sounds like a doer, someone who can get things done even if she obviously has a full plate.
    Thanks for sharing.
PS – when I was in school at FSU, we used to play city league softball in the shadow of the prison. Of course, I had to use an alias in fear of being placed on the other side of the wall………

    • bdorman264 Thanks Bill! Didn’t realize you had an FSU connection! And I know EXACTLY where you’re talking about. I participated in a 5K that began and ended at the jail once – the Jailbreak 5K. There sure is a lot of correctional facility talk in my world isn’t there?

      • biggreenpen bdorman264 actually she is a NY Giants fan and a huge Arizona State/Pac12 fan. She is an infiltrator Bill.

        • Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen bdorman264 At least she landed in the right spot; we’ll convert her…:).

        • Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen bdorman264 for college sports: anything Florida State. For pro sports — hubs does enough pro sport following for the both of us. He’s a Lions fan. Someone’s gotta root for ’em. And (tangent … you’ve figured out I’m about those right?) … I leave people confused all the time. Friends thought I had some pool proficiency because I am the FourSquare mayor of a place called Corner Pocket — it is a HUGE pool hangout but I go there to pick up my father in law he doesn’t drive. They were in denial about my inability to play pool until they insisted I try. They’re believers in my pool ineptitude now. Completely.

  • AH biggreenpen finally unmasked! It took years to find out who this masked super hero really was. We finally learned who was responsible for bringing the Penguin and Joker to justice…. Paula Kiger….unassuming Florida mom and runner. During days she can be found at work, shopping at Target, or having afternoon Iced Tea with her Mah Jongg group. Yet she is biggreenpen who stopped both Dr No and Goldfinger from world domination. The same biggreenpen who has been interviewed by howard stern, jay leno, barbara walters, and montelle williams. By day she blogs ‘Oh not one of those….blahggers…..ew. I mean who blahgs these days” At night fearless biggreenpen protector of the innocent, the meek, and those incapacitated from Ice Cream Frozen Brain.
Q: Did you really feel you would never get unmasked?
biggreenpen yes I really thought I could. I mean who would ever expect that I was Big Green Pen?
Q: How did ginidietrich find out?
biggreenpen oh it was at one of the blogging meet ups with those big name know the ones who I can never remember their names. Anyway I met ginidietrich for some boxed wine (her favorite) and I said ‘brb need to freshen up’ And then wasn’t back for 45 minutes. She check the ladies room and didn’t find me but I left the window open. She said ‘You were gone and during that time we get news Osama Bin Laden was killed’ Are you biggreenpen Paula?! I couldn’t lie to ginidietrich plus had to tell someone how I wrecked his butt and made him cry for his momma before taking him out.

Q: How has your life changed now?
biggreenpen well I get offered free things everywhere now. People stop me for my autograph. Really nice stuff. But ironically they don’t say ‘Hey biggreenpen ‘ they say ‘Hey you are that Follow Friday lady’ so in that sense I feel I have gotten my cover back…thanks to ginidietrich

    • Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich LOL this is not the kind of comment to read on your way out the door to work! Will respond later after I digest!! 🙂

    • Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich There are no words for how much I  love Howie. **swoon**

      • belllindsay Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich Does Howie have some of these canned, or are they live every Friday?

        • RebeccaTodd belllindsay Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich Pretty sure they are live. I remember back in early ‘aught 12 Howie and I were rock climbing in Manchuria, we had just scaled a massive rock face when we heard a tweet and a carrier pigeon with a red ribbon labeled “SpinSucks” gracefully sailed down and landed on his shoulder. He insisted that we take a 15 minute break so he could respond. Then he undid his climbing harness and proceeded to climb freehand while humming CCR’s “Suzy Q.”
Haven’t seen anything like it before or since.

        • JoeCardillo RebeccaTodd belllindsay Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich Well played, sir.

        • JoeCardillo RebeccaTodd belllindsay Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich I loved that moment! Oh Suzy Q! Oh Suzy Q Honey I love you….SUUUUZZZZZZZYYYY Q!

    • Howie Goldfarb biggreenpen ginidietrich Okay I spent all night digesting this and still can’t think of a catchy response. Hope that doesn’t get my #FF rescinded because I love it. And boxed wine. 🙂

  • Best. Avatar. EVER!!! LOL Welcome to the crazies club Paula!! 😀

  • Yay biggreenpen! I think it’s awesome that you celebrated you weather man moving on… there are far too many newsreaders and far to few news (and yes weather counts) men and women. Congrats on the #FF!

    • briantudor biggreenpen Thanks Brian. One little spur of the road of my career path was doing career counseling — I have always been fascinated by what makes people choose their professions. In Sean’s case, he truly loves weather — he’s not just reading numbers off of a screen — and it’s a pretty cool combination to have social media/communications savvy to go along with it. I figure he’ll keep moving up and someday I’ll be sitting in my living room watching him on a national something and say “I knew him when” :-).

  • Good Morning biggreenpen Welcome to the crazy that #FF will bring you 🙂

    • aimeelwest biggreenpen Thanks! Among the other crazy stuff going on, this one is more than welcome!

  • John_Trader1

If only I had the guts to post my run times and distances for the world to see. Nice to meet you biggreenpen!

    • John_Trader1 biggreenpen If I only I actually ran, not just sitting around thinking about it.

      • RebeccaTodd John_Trader1 biggreenpen The only running I do any more is letting songs run through my head… much easier on the knees

        • creativeoncall RebeccaTodd John_Trader1 biggreenpen I need a nap after all this talk.

    • John_Trader1 biggreenpen Hi John. I guess you could call it “guts” — Tallahassee is a HUGE running town with LOTS of very fast runners (including a former Olympian or two). Some of my times are the kinds of things that those people if they weren’t so kind would call “jogging” or “super slow cool downs” — but on balance it’s about accountability and making it public inspires those who don’t think they are “fast enough” to even try and maybe (jury’s out on this) reminds the superstars that their slow is our fast, and the point is to enjoy running at whatever speed. I’ll stop before I soapbox out. 🙂

  • A great reco!! Paula and I met via Twitter thanks to JasMollica. When I collected testimonials for Jason after he was let go Paula was one of the first to share her support. I saw how giving of a person she was through social media and today’s #FF demonstrates how selfless she is every day.

    • StephanieFlo JasMollica Thanks Stephanie!!

  • Hi everyone! I have some commitments today that will keep me limited for social media (and for some reason my work browser won’t let me scroll on the Spin Sucks page). I promise to get back to each of you individually and THANKS for all your great comments and good vibes!!

  • Glad to see the fearless and fun @biggreenpen featured here. Contrary to her protestations, I can too rhyme Big Green Pen… now and then.  Now I’d like to see all the rest of you Spin Suckers follow Paula’s singing example  (my guess is it’ll be easier than matching her running times for most of us).   Welcome to the #FF club, Paula!

    • creativeoncall I don’t sing well, but I sing loud. Worked well in college at the bars, now it is just a more effective replacement for Pepper Spray.

      • Joshua Wilner/A Writer Writes creativeoncall Well, start working on that loud “guest song blog” for #SocialSong Saturday… maybe you can do a duet via Hangout with biggreenpen  (and ginidietrich  belllindsay pattiknight yvettepistorio RebeccaTodd Howie Goldfarb bdorman264 @jasonkonopinski aimeelwest … anybody getting the hint  yet?)

        • creativeoncall Joshua Wilner/A Writer Writes biggreenpen ginidietrich  belllindsay pattiknight yvettepistorio RebeccaTodd Howie Goldfarb bdorman264 aimeelwest I like to believe I sing better than this guy

        • Joshua Wilner/A Writer Writes creativeoncall biggreenpen ginidietrich  belllindsay pattiknight yvettepistorio RebeccaTodd Howie Goldfarb bdorman264 aimeelwest Hearing is believing… let’s hear it!

          O M G – at least i know the words and i know that I sing bag so I just don’t sing

  • Woot! Congrats Paula!

    • yvettepistorio Thank you, dear fellow introvert. 🙂

  • Happy follow Friday Paula!

  • Good to see you here Paula.

    • Joshua Wilner/A Writer Writes Thank you!

  • Happy Friday to you, Paula!  Always great to meet another writer. 😀

    • jasonkonopinski Thanks Jason, same here!

  • Question: is it a green-colored pen or does it actually dispense green ink? Green ink that you actually write with? Because that’s kind of crazy. Happy FF, Paula!
And I was not aware there were rules to The Three Things, but I always assume I’ve heard of nothing this group hasn’t already heard of …

    • RobBiesenbach oh green INK for sure!!! And this is one of the few times that following the rules in life has gotten me something good!

  • PattiRoseKnight1

Great minds think alike….green is my absolute favorite color…. I love green 🙂

    • PattiRoseKnight1 Green does have a certain satisfying look anywhere it goes, doesn’t it? I’m seeing a lot of it in nutritional shakes among all the fitness people I follow – kale – that may take a little getting used to! (and my fave color outside of writing instruments is red!)

  • Gawsh Paula, this is great. I’ve only had the pleasure of your acquaintance for a few months but I really respect your thoughtful comments, and great attitude.
Like Bill I also have a spot in my heart for Tallahassee. In college my track team used to go to FAMU for a spring break track meet every year and it was my first intro to really good jumbalaya and gumbo. Such a beautiful and friendly city.

    • JoeCardillo Thanks Joe! Tallahassee is a really unique place (although I have to say in my heart of hearts there is no place that will ever take the place of Manhattan). It is great for raising kids. Don’t know if you ventured far from the track when you were here, but Tallahassee runners get plenty of hill training. As well as heat/humidity training! Thanks for your kind words.

  • JasMollica

Paula is not only a great woman, she is a great example of how social media can be used for awesome things. Our days are better because Paula is part of them. Oh, and I still have the big green pen she gave me a few years back. Huge hugs biggreenpen! 🙂

    • JasMollica biggreenpen Thank you, Jason. I’ll never forget how you did a guest post for me back when I had .0345 readers. OR how you got me connected with the Blue Key project. Among other things. 🙂

  • Baldydog

I love the idea of posting her running time..I have a personal goal of 1000 miles this year(bicycle), after almost two decades of maybe 100 miles per year, with already 100miles in May, I am on my way. Maybe posting on my Twitter will help to motivate as well.

    • Baldydog great idea!!! I use DailyMile and there’s a widget that posts whatever I put on DM, on my blog. Good luck with your goal!!

  • Dear everyone who commented here. The green pen is a little red from the blushing she is doing. It is nice to meet all of you/get reacquainted with some of you. I have to be at the skating rink at 3 a.m. (yes, yay, chaperoning an all night skate) but will circle back around over the weekend and chat a bit more. Favorite twitter day ever.

  • I’ve been chatting back and forth with Paula for a couple years now since we both were doing blogging prompts in a link exchange. That’s how I learned that biggreenpen is living in my hometown, Tallahassee! It’s been a long time since we talked – I need to fix that.
