Gin and Topics: Aunt Carol, Old Men, and Star Wars Dogs

GUESS WHAT?!? It is snowing again! This makes me so happy!

Jack Bauer and I will be out cross-country skiing at lunchtime. Well, I’ll be skiing. He’ll be marking every tree along the lakefront as his.

This week’s Gin and Topics turned into all videos. You know what happens? People send me links and videos or post them on my Facebook wall. Which I love (makes my job a lot easier). And this week they all happen to be videos.

So, happy viewing! Some of these are downright hilarious.

5. Aunt Carol Usher. This is not my Aunt Carol. It is someone’s Aunt Carol and she dances to Usher using a bathroom chair and some smoooooth moves.

4. Old Man Shuffling. Speaking of smooth moves, check out this old man shuffling and his awesome socks. I really want dude at the end to get out of the way of the camera. He’s blocking my view! I want to hug him and squeeze him and call him George…and feed him a banana split.

3. I Hate Your Blog. On Wednesday, I did a webinar for MarketingProfs. The consumate professionals they are, they had me log in 30 minutes early to be sure the audio and video all worked. After about 10 minutes of prep work, they put me in the virtual lobby, where there were jamming out. Suddenly, I perked up when I heard, “I hate your blog. It’s incredibly terrible and bad.” And I found the song for you. You’re welcome.

2. Sh*t Nobody Says. “Twilight deserves an Oscar.” HAHAHAHAHA!! Alright, the meme might be getting old, but this is pretty funny. Modems, farts (sorry, Lisa Gerber), Nickleback, faxes, taxes, WNBA, and more.

1. The Bark Side. This is the pre-release to the Volkswagon Super Bowl ad this year. It takes about eight seconds for you to realize what they’re doing and it’s pretty freaking awesome. Although, I was more impressed until Mr. D burst my bubble and told me it isn’t real. I really want dogs to be trained to do this!

Thanks to Nancy Lyons, Jason Konopinski, MarketingProfs, and Ken Mueller for the help this week.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

@ginidietrich Of course! BTW, Gin & Topics was a topic in my PR/Adv class last night – you may have some new viewers.

I want that Aunt Carol for birthday this year! Why are we “blessed” with all the wrong aunts – sh*t I shouldn’t say!

  4. I’d wager that marketingprofs was responsible for selecting that hold music.

OLD MAN SHUFFLING! OMG I want to shrink him and put him in my pocket. But you called dibs first so I’ll wait for the next cute old guy doing something too young for his age.

  7. Xecunet says:

@ginidietrich @spinsucks 8 minutes is a lot of time…will we be paid for this?

  13. hahahaha…. @ginidietrich I’m thinking you should start a new segment (not that you don’t have ENOUGH work to keep you out of mischief) called Viewing Videos Voraciously and just share these outrageous and hilarious videos with your loyal readers 😉

  14. SteveNargang says:

@ginidietrich – bummer, SpinSucks videos are not iPhone compatible?

  15. AskKim says:

LOL! I’d always wondered just how you were supposed to dance to the shufflin’ song… now I know! Guess the guy in his spiffy socks showed us all! Have you seen the video of the old turkish guy dancing yet?

Love numbers 2 and 4. Who listens to Usher? Sheesh. Best music is definitely 2 and seriously Gini send me your IPod so I can load the music in collaboration with @jasonkonopinski and danperezfilms unless they get Andy Sandberg to write those I hate your blog lyrics (or the Grouch!)

And I can already see another cute VW commercial everyone loves and doesn’t sell a car so I can spend two weeks…no wait this year I will dedicate 3 to thrashing their creative agency and probably losing VW as a potential client forever…no wait….they will crawl to me begging for my guidance sooner than later. Happens all the time.

    Hold on…….someone at the door

See I told you. pepsi is here begging for advice on their ads after last year’s horrible debacle with assault clips. Now one year later they know they have no choice….but for me to fix this mess. I am holding out for 6 figures just to green light their ads for the next month.

Dear vw it will cost you less if you come to me sooner! Cute doesn’t sell. Show me cool freaking cars that kick ass on the road and have high quality..that is the ticket to sales!

    • ginidietrich says:

@HowieSPM How do you know their sales aren’t up? I’m curious to see this whole trend of sending you down a rabbit hole into an entire user experience from one ad. I think it might actually work.

      • HowieSPM says:

@ginidietrich would you buy a car based on a cute ad? Often it is price that drives sales and VW sales are up because they have great mileage.

Last night I bashed honda for their minivan and CRV spots. Then I saw a Dodge Truck spot that made me think it was a badass tough machine.

Then VW had a Jetta spot not bad because it highlighted their safety rating but they didn’t show the car.

Why spend so much to reach 60mil people and not show the car or sell it is my question.

Ironically for cute ads the Kia Sock Monkey Rave and the Hoodlum Hamsters I love. But whenever I see the Kia Soul here which is aimed at the youth market it is always people 50+ driving it.

And lastly for cars. Doesn’t matter what you do on TV. The minute you see it on the road and then see who drives it you make up your mind on whether you want to be them tossing everything out the window. Tough market!

This is the first time O.?’d encountered some of these before I got here. I’ve also learned that tablets make me more inclined to watch YT videos. Love the digs. Hadn’t seen that one.

  18. The Bark Side; I love it! But what I love most is that the pug does not bark even once during that entire parody. It just sits there looking all cute.
