Gin and Topics: Lollipops, Donkeys, and Misrepresentations
It’s Friday! And it’s the weekend before Halloween, which means you have today and tomorrow to get your pumpkin entry in on our Facebook wall.
I saw some of the prizes yesterday and I may have to enter myself! They’re goooood!
We’ll be announcing the winners on Monday.
So do that sometime before midnight on Saturday and read (and watch) Gin and Topics right now.
5. SNL Honors Steve Jobs; Skewers Netflix and Facebook. Thanks to Lisa Thorell, I saw this Saturday Night Live skit “hosted” by Charlie Rose where they honor Steve Jobs and skewer Netflix and Facebook. There are a few other cameos you just have to see for yourself.
4. Volkswagen Launch New Beetle with Brilliant Augmented Reality Campaign. This doesn’t make me want to buy a VW, but it does make me want to steal a bunch of ideas for clients and my own businesses. For those of you in PR, marketing, or advertising, it’s a not-to-be-missed campaign. Thanks to today’s #FollowFriday, Ken Mueller, for sending it to me.
3. Prostitue Turned Into Donkey. You just can’t make this stuff up. A man was arrested for bestiality. His defense? A prostitute turned into a donkey during sex.
2. Miss Representation: Is the Media Misrepresenting Women? Jenelle Conner sent this video to me the other day. I watched it twice. My thoughts/feelings are mixed, at best. Sometime in the next week or so I’ll pull together what I think about it and write a blog post. In the meantime, it’s a must watch. And I’m curious to hear what you think.
1. TakeThisLollipop. This has been making the rounds, but if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s something you need to check out. It’ll make Howie Goldfarb have convulsions. As a marketer, it’s interesting to see what kind of data you can get online for customers and prospects. As a human being, it’s pretty scary to see what kinds of information people can get about you from your online presence.
Have a great weekend…and don’t forget to send us your pumpkin carved photo!

I seriously couldn't watch the whole Lollipop video...it made the hair on my neck/arms stand up!! I even double checked my privacy settings, not that that's going to stop a hacker!!

LikeWhew the topics today really ran the gamut.
5.) LOVED the SNL bit...thank goodness for HULU because I can never make it past 10:30 anymore...pathetic. That was an awesome tribute/parody...I bet Steve Jobs would have thought it was hilarious!
4.)So cool...like ExtremelyAvg , I've never much thought about owning a VW (well I DID consider a Jetta TDI Sportswagon for awhile once upon some-no-longer-available money) but this campaign makes me want to reconsider.
3.) I'll let TheJackB handle this one...he seems to be doing a great job ;-) ....go Jack!!
2.) I don't even know where to begin. Well, maybe I do know where to begin...I immediately sent the link to my adult daughter. I have to process my thoughts (too many and some are very strong) and I really look forward to YOUR take on this ginidietrich
1.) Okay...I feel like a dork. Pardon my sounding like my Mom here, but am I supposed to let Take This Lollipop access my FB profile before I get to "see" what the hoopla is about? Dorkiest of dorks...I'll wait TYVM ;-)

LikeSocialMediaDDS On Lollipop...yes, you have to let it access your FB profile. Do it and then go into your privacy setting and unlink it.
I'm still gathering my thoughts on the Miss Representation video. The struggle I'm having is women are our own worst enemies. Combine that with the fact that we can/should use our feminity in business and I think I'll likely make some enemies when I write about it.

Likeginidietrich it IS a slippery slope...I sometimes feel that women DO give women a bad name. That said, the focus needs to be redirected to empower the VERY positive aspects of being a woman. I agree with lkpetrolino in that women and men are different and THAT SHOULD BE A GOOD THING!! One of the speakers that flew past on the MissRepresentation video is, I am pretty sure, an author I heard interviewed on WI Public Radio and, if it IS her, the interview that I heard was pretty provocative. Her opinion is that we need to start to immediately give messages to girls, even as babies and toddlers, about their potential. When we first meet a little toddler girl, for example, our urge (and she is really right about this) is to say something along the lines of "oh how pretty you look today" (really...think about how often we automatically do that!!). She, herself, struggles with that knee jerk response but, squelching it, she gets down to the child's eye level and asks her perhaps, what book she likes or what does she like to play with etc....bringing the young girls attention to something she LIKES to do and then focus on how fun, awesome, cool (fill in the blank) that is to do. If we do that consistently enough with little girls, they will stop thinking that their power lies in how they look/their beauty and more in what they are passionate about. I was absolutely hanging onto her every word and how powerful it would be to change the culture of how girls view themselves.
Okay...that's it...for now....oh and I will give Lollipop a look...

LikeI thought the Miss Representation video was interesting. I may write my own post about it. I am eminently qualifed, being a single, middle aged, male with a spotty dating history.

LikeExtremelyAvg You are probably just as qualified as anyone. I can't resist but a little mini rant about this....heck I might write my own post as well, however I fear it would turn into a three part series of me ranting and throwing my arms around spastically (I'm italian, I can't help it)
1) No doubt the media is agenda setting. That is true in this topic, it is true in politics, it is true in many, many, many things. There is no doubt about that fact
2) Woman and men are different. That is a law of nature. Women who try to succeed by trying to succeed 'as a man' will undoubtedly lose. However, there is nothing that prevents women to succeed by trying to succeed 'as a woman'. Because that is what we are. We are women, not men...and in that we have our own power. Sadly, too many women overlook this fact.
3) As a whole, women are their own worst enemies. This is not just true in gender equality, but in any circumstance where one sector of the populations feels they are being marginalized based on their (gender, culture, religion, race, sexual orientation, etc.). Go out, create your own reality, live the life you want, be the person you want to be. The biggest limitations are ALWAYS self imposed.
The End....for now.... :)

Likelkpetrolino Okay, though I am writing my own blog piece, I'm now concerned that it is not nearly as good as your comment. Okay, not really concerned. I will probably work the words 'monkey' and 'bacon' into my post, to distract people from it being sort of mediocre.

Likeginidietrichlkpetrolino Gosh, addressing #2 would be like wandering into a mine-field, blind-folded, dragging a donkey behind you (by a leash!). I'm really of two minds like you both. I don't like the role of victim but then you look at the stats for some of our major institutions/entertainment/etc. This is tough topic but I'm interested to read what you both have to say once you publish.

LikeI have never been a fan of VW's of any sort. I am a huge fan of clever though and the ad campaign was brilliant. I am a bit of a stubborn old codger and I have changed my opinion of the Beetle. I sort of want one now. I haven't clicked on the other links yet. I got too excited about the coolness of the VW campaign and had to start blathering on and on. I may be back.

LikeOk, I have to share a few things from the donkey story:
First:
There are places where having sex with an animal is a rite of passage. In a Vice documentary, Hani Miletski, a sex therapist and the author of Understanding Bestiality and Zoophilia, spoke about a community in northern Colombia where some people have relations with donkeys. "In that society, it is an ancient pre-Colombian belief [that] adolescent males will not reach competence in marriage unless they practice intercourse with donkeys," she said in the VBS.TV video."
This could be so much fun. Just think of the opportunities it presents. How much fun would it be to tell your 'date' that in your country you would normally find a donkey to practice with but tonight you have decided to give up the "ass" for her. That could lead to all sorts of good stories. Of course I would hide all sharp and blunt objects before saying so.
The second thing I noticed was this:
"In the United States, bestiality is illegal in thirty states, according to the Animal Legal and Historical Center at Michigan State University College of Law."
So we have 20 states where it is technically legal to "make love" to an animal. Something is very wrong with that.

Likeginidietrich My old blog has a few of these stories scattered through it so it caught my eye. I'll make a note of the 13 states where it is just a misdemeanor. ;)

LikeTheJackB Fascinating! Check it out: http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ovuszoophilia.htm
It's a felony in only 16 states. The other 13 states it's a misdemeanor.
