Gin and Topics: Of Cats, Dogs, and Logos Gone Wild

Gin and TopicsBy Jason Konopinski

This is the part of summer that has me looking forward to cool nights, bonfires, and hoodies.

We hit triple digits here in central Pennsylvania last week — with a heat index of 108°.

It’s been downright soupy out there.

The good news is I have a pretty rad cyclist’s tan, and the sweat gives me a nice shine. (Ed.’s note: EW!)

Anyhow, you don’t check in to hear me blather on. You want to laugh. You want to cry.

You want to roll your eyes at the insanity of people on the Interwebz. Right?

I can see why Gin and Topics is Gini Dietrich’s favorite post of the week to write. The moment of glory, the adoring fans, the ticker tape parade. I’ve been practicing my acceptance speech and flourish-y signature all week.

Okay, so I’m exaggerating a wee bit, but still, getting a chance to play video DJ for all the bits, bobs, and Internet tomfoolery we crazies send in each week was scads of fun.

This week’s entries come courtesy of Mr. D himself, Mattie Dietrich (who doesn’t have a web presence but still wants to see her name in lights), Lindsay Bell, Susan Cellura, and yours truly.

5. Catvertising. The Internet does like it’s cat videos, doesn’t it? John St, a creative collective/agency in Toronto, thinks that those fluffy felines are the next big thing in advertising. I think they might be onto something.

4. (I Wanna) Channing All Over Your Tatum. Jimmy Kimmel, Channing Tatum, and Jamie Foxx in a sultry R&B mix. I’m not sure there’s anything else I can say to prepare you for this. Just watch. It’s totally worth it. Oh, the double entendres. They’re just too delicious.

3. Dog sees her owner for the first time in six months. This might be the greatest video, well, ever. It’ll hit you right in the feels. A dog is reunited with her owner after he was overseas for six months. Who’s cutting onions in here?

2. Get Lucky, Sesame Street-Style. What more can I say? Daft Punk + Grover = win. My geeky little heart goes all pitter-pat.

1. Logo Design Gone Wrong

I’m a design geek. When logos make it out into the wild that are just filthy with innuendo and unintentionally hilarious graphics, I giggle like a loon. You will, too. Click here for logo design, done wrong.

Logo Design Gone Wrong

Have a great weekend, gang!

  • Ahh I love 4 but didn’t think I could get it by the censors!!! And Grover is my favourite muppet. Nice start to the weekend, thanks J!

    • RebeccaTodd “I wanna channing all over your tatum” — what does that even MEAN? 🙂

      • I, obviously, haven’t the slightest.

      • jasonkonopinski RebeccaTodd Some things are best left underanalyzed.

        • biggreenpen jasonkonopinski Listen, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

    • RebeccaTodd My SIL sent it in. How bad can it be??

  • Bob Farnham

I love Bombay Sapphire Gin. It’s still a little early though…

    • @Bob Farnham Hendricks and St. George Terroir are my two favorites.

  • Arment Dietrich, Inc.

It’s after noon – definitely not too early 😉 ^yp

  • Oh #3…, love, love!
And thoroughly enjoyed the Channing all over my Tatum – hilarious!

  • Catvertising!

  • I would just like to say it’s freaking fall in Chicago. It was 55 degrees last night. I was wearing my North Face fur-lined jacket. IN JULY.

    • ginidietrich It’s just barely touching 80 degrees here today. 55 yesterday morning, 59 this morning.
      It’s glorious.

      • jasonkonopinski ginidietrich If it’s cool nights, bonfires and hoodies you want, coastal CA is the ticket! Can’t remember where I heard it, but there is this story about SF:
New York Lady: There’s nothing so lovely as New York in October.
San Francisco Lady: My dear, it’s always October in San Francisco.

      • KevinVandever

jasonkonopinski ginidietrich Sunny and 75 in LA. Yawn.

  • KevinVandever

Nicely done! Can’t get the Channing song out of my head now. Thanks.

    • KevinVandever It could be worse. When I woke up on Sunday, I had NKOTB’s “Cover Girl” playing in my head over and over and over and over and over.

  • Oh boy Jason – you hit a home run with these choices!! I would just LOVE to have been in on the making of the “cat”vertising video — the attention to detail is awesome — it must have taken a long time production-wise to come off so well! And oh Grover “Getting Lucky” – yes yes yes. And that dog and its owner……have you seen the cat one? I’m not a dog person but Lord how I’d love for any living creature to be that happy to see me (can you tell I have teenagers?). Well done!

    • biggreenpen The cat one is HYSTERICAL. I almost included it instead of the logos one because the juxtaposition was just too delicious.

  • Did NOBODY like my “Eds Note”…??? I laughed again just now when I read it again. LOL

    • belllindsay Yes. I was thinking EW just as I read it. We’re on the same page.

  • My cat came running over to sneer at the happy dog video. (Just kidding, she came over to console me because I was bawling.)

  • So the Owner Returns made me tear up, and I KNEW the Arlington Pediatric was going to show up because you are WAY too much like @KMueller62

    • AmyMccTobin I’m pretty much a giant marshmallow for animals being reunited with their owners. The Wonderpup rules.

  • That dog sees his owner video definitely had me shed a tear or two! Thanks for sharing!

  • LOVED Catvertising. Just over 20 years ago I created an ad featuring my cat (for a flashllght company)… I guess I was ahead of my time!

    • spinchick You were ahead of your time!

    • spinchick Cats + Internet = PROFIT.

      • jasonkonopinskiginidietrich It was kind of a nifty print campaign for Maglite flashlights. “Cats can see in the dark. You need a Maglite.” 🙂  (OK, cats can’t REALLY see in the dark, but they almost can.) At trade shows after the ad came out, I would engage potential customers in chats about their pets (telling them it was my kitty in the ad). Those were great times. 🙂

  • rdopping

Hilarious series. I have a friend who works at John St. Have you seen the other video they did about the social media firm? Equally as funny. When I get to my laptop I look it up for y’all.

    • rdopping

      Byral. Check it out!

  • Didn’t know Sesame Street had it in them…and I remember seeing that Catvertising when it first came out. Hilariously relevant!
