Gin and Topics: Truth is Stranger than Fiction

By: Gini Dietrich | June 1, 2012 |

This morning I posted a picture of the temperature on Facebook.

It’s 48 freaking degrees in Chicago. On June 1. It was in the mid-90s this past weekend. Heck, I have a great start to my really unattractive cycling tan already. And now it’s too cold and rainy to ride outside.

If everyone in this city gets sick, you’ll know why.

I hope the weather is better where you are and you can get outside to play this weekend. It is June, after all.

And with that, I give you Gin and Topics.

5. Banker Saves a Dozen Ducklings. Truth is stranger than fiction and that’s definitely the case here. A banker saw a duck waiting for her ducklings to jump from a tree branch two stories high. He was nervous they wouldn’t make the leap so he went to help them. You have to see it to believe it. Thanks to Nancy Cawley Jean for making sure I saw this!

4. Polar Bear Pictures. Jennifer DeVitt sent these to me this morning so I had to move an already written #4 and replace it. It’s worth it. Trust me. And, you’re welcome.

3. Tornado Backdrop in Kansas Wedding Photos. I think I might have to put Deb Dobson on the payroll. She finds the best things for Gin and Topics! Including this one…again truth is stranger than fiction. A tornado coming right at these people during their wedding ceremony. Unbelievable.

2. The Best of Prom 2012. As if prom wasn’t awkward enough, now we have bloggers choosing the best photos from the web and highlighting them. And when I say “best” I really mean terrible. I’ve inserted my favorite of the bunch below, but if you click on the link above, you can see the rest. Thanks to Rusty Speidel for the find!

1. Isaac’s Live Lip-Dub Proposal. This video made the rounds on Facebook last weekend so you may have already seen it. But if you haven’t, I saved it for number one for a reason. It’s a must watch. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll watch it more than once. The only thing I don’t like about it is he’s setting her expectations way too high for the rest of their married lives!

  • I love #1.  And, yes, I cried. Get over it.

  • M_Koehler

The prom thing was hysterical. I do applaude the nerdy guys that had the totally out of their league girls.

And people wonder why I skipped our Prom. I dis ‘t want any incriminating photos showing up somewhere

    •  @M_Koehler You mean the ones I would show everyone?

      • M_Koehler

@ginidietrich You would totally do that. It’s ok, there is a pic of you from an Afterprom boat party on the internet that I’m just dyyyyyyyin’ to post here. Oh and a few other pics from school too. Blackmail, it’s an ugly but delightful game.

        •  @M_Koehler  Just remember…I know the way to your heart (food) and will cut that off if you ever surface any photos.

        • M_Koehler

@ginidietrich hence why none have ever made it out. And you do know the quickest way to my heart. Hmm, speculoos ice cream…I might have to make some really soon. Or maybe goat cheese ice cream.

        •  @M_Koehler  Go get some ricotta cheese and thyme. Warm up 2 T of honey and 1/4 t of thyme in a saucepan. Pour it over the ricotta. Serve on toasted French bread.
Thank you for not sharing photos.

        • M_Koehler

@ginidietrich Totally trying this when I return home

  • I get the expectations too high logic…. the video has over 11 million hits, they are already celebrities…
Talking about weather; it is 93 F here and we are still calling it okay! 🙁

    •  @Hajra  That’s too hot. I just want a happy medium. Maybe I could take some of your heat and add it to our cold?

      •  @ginidietrich Please do… in about a months time we will hit around 120 F with about 90% humidity…. that is when you can talk about others borrowing our summers!

  • debdobson62

OMG, I’ve watched the duck video several times already and have my whole team watching.  To quote my colleague Shaun, “That’s awesome.  Good PR for bankers.”  And I’m liking this payroll idea.  Kansans aren’t afraid of a lil’ ol’ tornado.

    •  @debdobson62 Payroll…or an iPad?

      • debdobson62

Oh hmmm,  an iPad please 🙂

  • That proposal made me tear up!  To put that much thought and energy into telling someone you want to marry them – plucks my heartstrings!

    •  @AmyMccTobin I cried, too. Just a little bit.

  • Andrea Pecoraro

    Love it!

  • I heard that duck man is supplying some of the cities best restaurants with Foie gras. 😉

  • rustyspeidel

I WAS so many of those prom dates, it scares me even now.

    •  @rustyspeidel You were the one in camo, weren’t you?!

  • Imagine my surprise watching the duck video and it turns out I totally know the “Duck Man.” And I had no idea. He said he’s going to stop by in the comments over the weekend. 🙂
Now about this proposal thing. Clearly there was a choreographer in the family, yes?

    •  @Lisa Gerber The choreographer HAD to be the girl in front.

      •  @ginidietrich totally agree, and I think she was the girl’s sister.

        •  @Lisa Gerber I get the feeling several of them must be theater people or something.

  • KevinVandever

What if she had said “no”?

  • Oh my God, #1. That was AMAZING.

    •  @annedreshfield Right?!? Did you cry?

      •  @ginidietrich but of course! Now I have to go fix my makeup…darn it Gini! 🙂

        •  @annedreshfield LOL!! Dab that mascara from the corner of your eyes.

  • On #1. Amazing. Spokane, WA is Bob’s hometown. Makes a person proud. I’m wondering if it was last month, when their annual Lilac Parade took place. Because why else would the streets be blocked off (lucky ducklings) and the handy police escort be there? Reminds me of the children’s book, “Make Way for Ducklings,” which is sort of the same story. Thanks for the share, Gini.  : )

  • I feel so bad for that girl in the prom picture. What they really need is a before and after picture of Dad when she sees that picture.
