The Future of Analytics

It’s Facebook question of the week time (clap, clap, clap!). This week I’m giving you a little repeat from a video I did for Radian6.

I’m a big fan of theirs so I was ecstatic when they asked me to guest blog for them.

And then they changed their minds and asked me to do a video instead.

I asked if they were sure. I mean, it’s one thing to do goofy videos for you guys. It’s totally a different thing to do it for a big, grown-up business.

But they were sure. They had two requirements: 1) I discuss the future of analytics and 2) I send them the script beforehand.

The future of analytics is an easy one. I clearly have opinions about that and about PR pros learning some marketing skills so they can measure their efforts. I’m a big believer in what we do becoming an investment vs. an expense.

So check that off the list.

But the script ahead of time proved to be a little more difficult.

One wouldn’t think that would be difficult, but I never script myself (which is why the videos are always goofy), but I did as they asked.

When I sent the script, I asked if I could also use props. They said yes. I don’t think they realized what kind of props I would use.

So the video below is the result of what I did for them (if you can’t see it in your Reader, click here and it’ll magically appear). I, personally, think it’s worth watching for the props alone.

But you tell me. And also tell me what you think about the future of analytics. Where are we going? What else do we need to be considering.

And one more thing before you watch the video: Head over to Facebook and leave me a question on the wall, will ya?

P.S. Special thanks to Lindsay Bell and Amanda Nelson. They were SUPER easy to with…and fun, too!

It is not only the collection of the data, which is important, but it is also the proper analysis after the gathering. The first step is often the design of the data collection methodology.

I worked for GEICO, in the marketing department, and it was my job to gather the data and create reports to explain the results. A typical campaign would take me 80 -100 hours to write the computer code to run the analysis. It would take another couple of weeks to review the data after the job had run. I mention this, because sometimes the results are difficult to discern by looking at very type of numbers. (ie, A > B = Good).

One also needs to set up a control group, to measure against. This is a subtle step, which is often ignored by non-data people. It can be the difference between guessing a campaign was a success and being able to say definitively so that management will pour another couple of million into the project.

I agree with everything you said about gathering data. I would just add that before the first data is collected; try to answer the question, “What is our control group?” I can say from my experience at GEICO that answering this question is often very difficult, but when it is defined, makes the final analysis possible.

I was once able to calculate the ROI for the group of people who received, but did not return a paper opinion survey. I had to create methodology which took over 200 pages of computer code and devise a metric which had never been used before in the insurance industry. I also had to get my methodology reviewed by other people, to prove it was valid. It was hard, but in the end, my analysis stood up and my report was accepted as valid.

Every client and campaign is different. When one gets adept at building a measurement strategy, it becomes easier. Good luck with all your data.

While I agree with everything you said, Gini, I do believe that "the future of analytics" is a much bigger, broader question than being able to tell where one gets their referring traffic. In the context of Hubspot (of whom I'm a huge fan) and "inbound marketing," yes, you're right on the money. But in the bigger, broader question of "the future of analytics," it's not going to be what you measure or how you measure it, but the actual ANALYSIS of not only inbound links, but of user-behavior data, how that relates to not only PR, but UX, and things like mobile conversion metrics (something I'm surprised that people are only starting to get wind of) and what it all means -- how they relate to overall goals, the bottom line, etc. from a much more multifaceted approach.

As an aside, I agree with those who prefer the hand-held signs. Your handwriting is much more legible than mine, and I think it gave the video much more "personality." Loved it. :)

Man, a scripted video?! That just takes away all the fun! ;) I've actually used "props" like that before - I scribbled a message on a piece of paper. It was one of the first videos I did.

Good advice. I love the unique Twitter page idea...it's been on my to-do list for a LONG time. It's time to get that done already!

Scripted Gini = serious Gini!!!

I just attended a Google Analytics seminar in NYC with PPCNYC - you're spot on.

jennwhinnem you did?? Tell us more!

jennwhinnem 287 pts

Lisa Gerber Honestly my biggest takeaway from the event was to use the Google URL builder so that you can understand not only where your traffic came from, but what they did on the site AFTER they got there. I feel like everybody else knew about that except me!

lauraclick 164 pts

jennwhinnemLisa Gerber EEK. You're not the only one who doesn't know that! I need to look into that. I was looking for that info in analytics the other day and couldn't find it. That's probably the piece I'm missing...

lauraclickjennwhinnemLisa Gerberginidietrich had told me about Google Analytics and I still have one set up for her so I can stalk her. It has been invaluable for monitoring online mentions and articles for a client of mine. And I just read this week it is the number one analytics tool for business (bet because it is free)

Great post Gini, and appropriate in a day and age where PR & social media folks no longer have a blank check (at least they shouldn't). Who in their right mind would embark on a PR/SM campaign in modern times without tying it into analytics? Measurement is is the only way I can tweak my strategies to be more effective.

FYI -- I don't clap when I get your Facebook question of the week. I whistle. Loudly.

John_Trader1 Ohhhh. OK! Next week I'll do "It's Facebook question of the week time, (whistle, loudly!)"

ginidietrich you know how much this makes my head spin:) The future of analytics?...I'm barely handling the present of analytics, haha! But even when my head's swimming with new information, I know it's sinking in. Love the vlog: love the props.

KDillabough You're not alone. Actually, you just gave me a good idea. lisagerber let's do a section in Spin Sucks Pro on Google analytics, setting up goals, what to track, unique URLs, etc. Yes?

Lisa Gerberjeanniecw Oh dang! It is...but not as clever. I totally should have mimicked that.

ginidietrichjeanniecw I think I might be a tool. I think it's Bob Dylan.

jeanniecw 106 pts

Lisa Gerberginidietrich Actually, I think you're right on both counts. Bob Dylan did it first, but REM imitated it, too. Therefore, you are not a tool. You're welcome.

jeanniecwLisa Gerber Oh she's still a tool.

I like your props far better than something gussied up into a PowerPoint presentation that they don't deserve. Much, much better to keep the focus on you by holding something.

That aside, two things come to mind. The first is that this is the best argument against using Basefook as your biz website - you have no idea what is going on & never will. The second is that wordpress analytics can give you even more supplemental data on search terms, links in and out, and so on that make a great supplement for google analytics - which is another plug for using wordpress as a great biz site and the center of a social media strategy.

ginidietrich 5382 pts moderator

wabbitoid I was missing you! I read a few of your blog posts last night and thought, "Where is Erik?!"

Love the extra tips on WordPress analytics. Thanks!

ginidietrich Thanks, been bizzy - working to catch up, hopefully I'll get more work & get ahead soon. Nice to not be totally broke all the time!

I can't say enough good things about WordPress, to be honest. Most clients learn how to update it themselves in no time flat. I think it's one of the most important tools for democratizing the web there is (outside of, hate to admit it, facebook).

Leave it to me to comment first on something other than the topic- good penmanship. Mine has gone to hell, the hands that once filled out blue books with reckless abandon can't do that anymore. Too much time on the 'puter.

The big problem that I have seen with metrics is that people get caught up in stuff that really isn't relevant. The other challenge seems to be trying to measure "branding." Are people asking for a "soda" or for a "coke."

KDillabough 1088 pts

TheJackB Oooh, I love good penmanship Jack! I write longhand in my journals...love to see handwritten ginidietrich

ginidietrichTheJackB Yes, and I think that's a travesty! I. Love. Handwriting.

TheJackB 1526 pts

ginidietrich They taught my son in 3rd grade, but I don't think that he has ever really used it.

MichaelProcopio 5 pts

TheJackB what metrics do you find valuable?

TheJackB 1526 pts

MichaelProcopio It really depends on the campaign and the goals. In a different life I sold ad space for a living. Most of my clients were biz/tech companies that you have heard of before.

I remember a campaign where we helped promote a software package that cost more than 1 million to purchase. The agency had a bug up its butt about how many impressions needed to be served. It caused issues.

The reason it caused issues was because the target demographic for that product was limited. There were only so many companies that would be interested in it and able to purchase the package. But the agency was adamant about trying to serve more impressions so we had to go outside the truly qualified audience and pitch people who weren't interested.

It was a waste of time and resources.
