Gin and Topics: The Five Second Rule

Gin and TopicsBy Gini Dietrich

Hello, Friday. So we meet again.

I wonder what today has in store for us? Last Friday, we were introduced to Peach.

Could we possibly get another new social network today? Could it be a trend for Fridays in 2016?

That might actually put every marketer in every part of the world over the edge.

So here is some comic relief for you in the form of Gin and Topics.

This week’s videos are courtesy of Carlos Cruz, Brian Vickery, Mr. D., and yours truly.

5. Five Second Rule. Oh my gosh! I want to do this for the Spin Sucks Inquisition! How hilarious would it be to ask our guests to name three things about something in five seconds or less? Pretty hilarious, I’d say! For instance, “Name three curse words you’re allowed to say on TV.” And Ricky Gervais says, “Cockeral, darn, and Dick…Cheney!”

Watch the five second rule with Ricky Gervais and Ellen. Bet you couldn't play this fast.Click To Tweet

4. Pickup Basketball Stereotypes. Mr. D plays in a pickup game three mornings a week. I tease him that he’s in the senior NBA. These guys take the game waaaaaaaay seriously and, based on the stories he tells me (as I silently roll my eyes into the back of my head), I could tell you who is each of these stereotypes. For the record, his nickname is NGK (nice guy Kelly).

Do you, or someone you love, play pickup basketball? Then these stereotypes will work for you.Click To Tweet

3. Seventeen Thoughts You Had Watching “Making A Murderer.” If you haven’t binged this show yet (what is wrong with you??), nothing will be ruined by watching this video. There are zero spoilers. But, for those of you who have watched it, it’ll hit pretty close to home. “THAT IS COERCION! You cannot do that! He’s only 16. I don’t have a law degree and I know this. Where is his attorney?!?” All of those were yelled at my television.

If you've watched 'Making a Murderer,' I guarantee you've yelled some of these 17 things at the TVClick To Tweet

2. “Tonight Show Celebrity Photobomb” with Jimmy Fallon and Sesame Street. This is adorable! Unsuspecting kids have their photos taken at 30 Rockefeller and Jimmy Fallon and Sesame Street characters photo bomb them. But what’s better is when they figure it out. A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!

What do you get when you combine kids, Sesame Street, and Jimmy Fallon? This adorable video.Click To Tweet

1. Ricky Gervais Opens the 2016 Golden Globes. If you missed the Golden Globes on Sunday, you definitely need to watch the opening monologue by Ricky Gervais. I have to say, it takes a lot a chutzpah to get up on stage and make fun of women’s rights…and he actually pulled it off. It’s not as funny as the Five Second Rule, but it’s a close second.

If you missed Ricky Gervais's Golden Globes monologue, here it is!Click To Tweet

Have a great weekend!

  • Oooh, Friday. Which means it;s Gin and Topics. Which means it’s the last post this week.
Which means MONDAY is the next post – huzzah! 🙂

  • PS – the last click to tweet, who’s responsible for the typo? I demand an instant and heartfelt apology, because social media outrage!! 😉

  • Oh, I loved the monologue. He’s so funny.
    Have a great weekend!

  • Danny Brown Go away!

  • Danny Brown Argh! Thank you! I fixed it.

  • Danny Brown You are hilarious! I hate to admit it, but very funny!

  • Corina Manea He is very funny!

  • LauraPetrolino How’s the search for new digs going?

  • Awesome – the pickup basketball stereotypes made the short list.

  • Mihai Petre

I was the first to see this change, too…HA

    • Just like you were the first to see the video that no one was supposed to see until today!

      • Mihai Petre

        I see everything! 😛

        P.S.: I´ve commented directly from my e-mail inbox 😀

  • I liked no. 5, but no.1 is my favorite.

    • Danny Brown

Anything with Ricky Gervais pretty much gets my vote. Have you seen his show “Derek” on Netflix? Amazing – funny, poignant, dark, light…. no wonder it scooped a couple of awards.

      • I need to see that. Thanks Danny, you just gave me weekend entertainment. 🙂

    • Do you like the new comments, Corina?!?

      • Danny Brown

So here’s what I love about this set-up. I jumped over to the site (from my reply to Corina’s comment) and saw my response had already gone live. I then see this comment from you appear live.

So, I pop back to my email (natch) and there’s this reply from you, waiting in my Inbox. Now do you see why I’ve been raving over these guys for almost a year?? 🙂

        • There’s no need to refresh the page for new comments. Woo hoo!

          • Danny Brown

Exactly. And that’s just a very small part of the black magic voodoo in store…. 🙂

      • I love it! I have to try it too.

        • Know what I love the most (or one of the features I love the most)? The throttle management, so it’s down to users to decide how much they take part.

          Roll on Monday, hehe. 🙂

          • Sweet. We’re doing a nice overhaul of that right now as well. More to come soon! Looking forward to monday.

      • So, it automatically recognizes the emojis, even from email. I’m starting to like this more and more.
One other thing that I liked was the other day when I commented on one of Danny’s post, I received (after several emails) an email says something like: The conversation is hitting up on the post…, we stopped send you emails so not to spam you. If you want to receive them, go to the post. Or something along these lines. I loved that.

        • Exactly. It gives full control to the reader, which (given the communication channel) is great:

  • Hey! Jason from Postmatic here.

We’re still working on the implementation so hold tight. It’ll be pretty hot later tonight or over the weekend. But thanks for the awesome words!
