TL;DR

AI isn’t killing content marketing—it may actually be ushering in its second golden age. As AI answer engines stand between our words and our customers’ eyes, the fundamentals of great content marketing (clear copywriting, credible earned media, pointed social content, and integrated paid media) matter more than ever. The difference is that marketers are no longer writing only for humans; we’re also writing for robots.

AI Citations and the Second Golden Age of Content Marketing

I feel like I’ve seen two major eras of AI (as they relate to marketing) in 2026 alone.

  1. ChatGPT, can you write this blog post for me?
  2. Google AI, what is the answer to my question?

Both have forced me to take a good, hard look at my skills.

Era one was the spookier one, but thankfully, I think we’re finally exiting it as people realize AI writing is boring, predictable, and easy to spot.

Era two is less scary because, unlike era one, it doesn’t make me question myself or if my skills as a content marketer have become irrelevant. It has actually done quite the opposite.

Let me explain.

Thanks to working under the wing of Gini Dietrich, mother of Visibility Engineering™ and the PESO Model®, I know that AI agents are the ones currently deciding if my brand is trustworthy or not based on the messages I put out into the ether about it.

Yes, you read that right. AI agents are deciding if my brand can be trusted based on what I write about it and who corroborates it.

Reminds me of the good old days. You know, the ones where copywriters spent time creating landing pages that answered our customers’ questions? Or, more specifically, the ones where our brand’s exciting news and changes were picked up by journalists, helping build our brand’s credibility.

Sounds a lot like… content marketing.

AI needs us to tell it which brand to trust, so it can tell customers which brand to trust. The way we do that is by creating those stories and having them corroborated through the pipeline of the PESO Model.

We create owned content that answers questions and paints a clear picture of the problem our brand solves.

Earned media corroborates that story.

Shared media puts that story at the center of conversations.

Paid amplifies it all.

By acting as a gatekeeper between our words and our customers’ eyes, AI has actually brought us back to the golden age of content marketing—where the written word matters more than ever.

As I said, it’s just like the good old days of content marketing. The only difference is, now there’s a monkey in the middle. That could be why we’re seeing an uptick in hiring “storytellers.”

The story in question? Who your brand is.

AI is bringing us back to our roots as content marketers. Here are the skills you should consider strengthening to get your brand past the AI monkey in the middle.

Content Marketing Skills That Earn AI Citations

Copywriting

As a rule of thumb, your content should provide concise, answer-first copy underneath each heading. Your brand will surface in AI answers if it’s providing the answers people are looking for.

(Seems obvious enough.)

All of your owned content—the blog, FAQ pages, and landing pages—is where AI will pull these answers from. If a full website copy audit is unrealistic right now, the best place to start would be your anchor hub.

Your anchor hub should be one of the strongest pages the internet has to offer on your topic. So, it should be written for discoverability, to answer questions, and explain how that thing works.

Here’s ours for the PESO Model.

Media Relations

AI brought earned media back from the dead, hooray! (We would argue it was never actually dead to begin with. But! The value of earned media is clear as day today because coverage is accelerating your brand’s visibility in AI answers.)

AI answers rely on clear, specific, and corroborated information—all things provided by a great media article and a news release. When you make your media relations a priority, that same information will be vouched for by a great publication, which increases your chances of an AI citation.

If you include the following in your news release, it will be easier for AI to find it (whether it’s published on your website, by a publication, or both. Ideally both!).

When pitching your news, high-domain authority general publications often feels the most attractive. However, LLMs focus on what can be corroborated first, not necessarily if the site has high authority.

For that reason, consider pitching to trade and B2B publications, which are being cited more than, for example, the New York Times.

Shared Media

Once upon a time, social media was for humans to connect. (Hence the word social). More likes, shares, and comments meant you were winning. Now, AI is reading social media, too.

So what’s winning in AI’s eyes?

When building a shared media strategy built to get you discovered in AI search, consider the following:

  1. Build a target audience question library and create content surrounding that
  2. Brainstorm comparison and decision-making content
  3. Consider your channel mix: Reddit and LinkedIn are among the top five most-cited domains on ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity, which makes sense because Reddit threads are pre-structured for passage extraction. Keep in mind AI indexes video transcripts from YouTube as well.

Paid Media

In the past, your paid job was relatively simple. Bid on the right keywords, show the right ad, and basically buy your way to a click.

Now, AI tells your customers the answers with very few ads in there.

(And where there are ads, customers tend to not trust the answer.)

If the LLM has never heard good things about you from your owned content, earned, and other trustworthy places, you won’t be in the answers.

Period.

Even if you try to buy your way in.

So, ironically, the most crucial step in your paid strategy is to strengthen your Owned and Earned. In other words, all of your marketing has to be integrated.

AI Citations Are Making Content Marketing More Valuable Than Ever

For all the talk about AI replacing copywriters, I challenge with this: it has actually made human content marketing more valuable than ever before. Except now, we’ve had to learn to write in another language (one AI understands). Good thing marketers are always up for a new challenge.

Ensuring all of your claims (wherever they live) are communicated in a way the AI agents understand and trust is what will help get you cited.

That means your owned content is clear as a bell and authoritative, and everything else links back to your anchor hub.

Your earned coverage gives AI a second source to corroborate the first.

Your shared content is where AI can watch your content get talked about.

And your paid content signals reach and relevance.

But here’s the key difference: brands who try to DIY all of this alone tend to let each channel say something slightly different—the website says one thing, the news release says another, the social captions riff on both. To a human, that’s just normal variation. To AI, it’s a red flag. AI reads the inconsistency as noise instead of trust signals, can’t tell which version is true, and chooses someone else to cite instead.

If your owned media says one thing and your earned coverage says another, that’s a translation problem—and a 30-minute conversation worth having. AI Visibility isn’t on Duolingo just yet, so feel free to set up a 30 minute conversation with us and we’ll help you translate.
