#FollowFriday: Kate Finley

By: Gini Dietrich | September 28, 2012 |

I met Kate Finley at a PRSA event a couple of weeks ago.

She immediately struck me as one of our industry’s up-and-comers because she: A) Wasn’t afraid to introduce herself to me and tell me something we had in common (cycling); B) Follow me on the social networks and make sure she stayed top-of-mind with me; C) Took what we talked about that evening and immediately applied some tips; and D) Writes an awesome blog about food and fitness.

Speaking of her blog, 30 days ago, she undertook a challenge to live by a Paleo diet for 30 days. You can see the results here, but a sneak peak is she lost 10 pounds and two dress sizes.

I firmly believe part of the reason she was able to do this is she blogged about it. She made it visible, she tracked results, and she allowed readers to hold her accountable.

Now she’s on to the 30 day fitness challenge, where she’ll exercise for a concentrated 30 minutes every day…and combine that with her clean eating.

I know this isn’t the typical PR or marketing blog, but (as a hiring manager and blogger), I’m really impressed with her commitment to herself and to her blog. If her resume landed on my desk, this is the type of thing that would put her above her competition.

On the professional side, Kate is the director of events and outreach for the Ohio State Chiropractic Association, where she does media training, consumer relations, crisis, and events (more than 50 of them!).

She’s a new reader here, so I suggest you be nice to her…at least for today. But do follow her on Twitter, subscribe to her blog, or connect with her on LinkedIn. And, while you’re at it, take her 30 day fitness challenge and record your results. Let’s see if, by Halloween, you’re feeling lean and have more energy, too!

Welcomeeeeee.  I'm one of the nice ones, don't worry.  You are a rockstar! I admire your daily commitment. Kudos to Gini for reminding us we should apply the same kind of passion wherever we want by using you as a great example.

Now can I have my cookies guys? You told me to be nice!

@AnneReuss Cookies for you! Yes, you are definitely one of the nice ones. You tip the scale nicely! Want some milk with your cookies?

@AnneReuss Oops I was actually working there for a second ... I'm back. Thanks for the welcome. Yes, sometimes the daily commitment takes time but I feel like that's the only way I can truly keep up with the ever-changing SM/PR environment. It's amazing! A cookie? Eat a brownie for me, won't you?

Hey Kate. Welcome. Anytime you want a big fat greasy cheeseburger just let me know and I will eat it for you. No need to sacrifice yourself. Yes, if Gini didn't warn you I am in Carmelo's 17% (sort of). Enjoy the popularity! Oh, BTW, did Ms. Dietrich tell you that You now are enslaved to Spin Sucks? I just received my first of many assignments this week. You know, Gini, it's really not nice not to warn people of their impending responsibilities? Toilets? What am I going to write about toilets? Look out Kate! :-)

@rdopping I followed a cheeseburger joint on Twitter (they have a great social media guy), and ended up with a bunch of free burger and milkshake certificates. So anyone who wants a ginormous Fatburger, c'mon to Spokane before my freebies expire on Halloween.

@rdopping Your reply made me laugh. Thanks for the welcome AND the warning, Ralph. <3

Pleased to meet you Kate. I admire your passion, it's something we all need a pinch more of in our lives and the fact that you emulate that passion through your blog is awesome.

I know quite a bit about the paleo diet, my brother is doing it now and has lost 20 pounds in a month. Best of luck to you as you continue on your fitness journey!

@John_Trader1 Hi John! Yes, life without passion isn't really life. I'm a firm believer in being happy as much as possible ;-) And Paleo pretty much rocks. I still love PR more but it's up there ...

Welcome!  They're all right, don't expect to get much done today at all.  We're way more fun than work anyway.  :)

It's always awesome to find a well written fitness blog, so thanks @ginidietrich for highlighting @kateupdates !   (A smiley and two exclamation points - that's nice enough, right?)

Hi Kate! Very nice to meet you here. I'm sure you've already seen how 83% of Gini's community is friendly and fun! (she is really trying to bring the other 17% around.)

Looking forward to getting to know you and I have no doubt that if Gini has recognized your value, our group is going to be enriched and that you're going to be in the 83% (I'm trying to get there myself!)

Welcome!

 @kateupdates What is LinkedIn?

Grats Kate. Just hope you know the last 8 Follow Fridays all wound up in rehab and with police records unable to handle the stardom and the rock and roll life style. But @ginidietrich has a webinar that can help prepare you for the fame and the fortune.

In fact the fasted rise and fall recorded @rdopping already is interred in a Canadian Mental Health facility because last weekend he was followed by mobs wherever he went all trying just to touch him and maybe have a bit of his 'glow' elevate their lives. This led to a 48 hour binge with the Beiber jetting to Europe and partying non-stop at Ibiza. He got home found his credit cards maxed, his home with yellow police tape blocking entrance and protesters outside demanding they see their new idol.

I suggest you go hang with @KenMueller on his porch and keep a low profile. His place is alcohol free and he has 4 pitbulls keeping away any visitors. Very peaceful and quite. Maybe decompress at the green dragon and shop for Amish Country treats.

@rdopping  @HowieG  @ginidietrich  @kateupdates Hi Ralph! Finding friends while hiking is the best! Haven't been to the French Alps yet though. I hiked the Appalachian Trail for a few days and bathing is totally not a requirement ;-)

@HowieG @ginidietrich @kateupdates Howe? Of what do you speak? I am more popular than ever. I even found a follower hiding out in the foothills of through French Alps. Hadn't bathed in weeks but you know, a friend is a friend.

" If her resume landed on my desk, this is the type of thing that would put her above her competition."  I"m saving this paragraph and showing it to my undergrad students. I constantly stress that for them to be blogging consistently now will give them a big boost when they are out looking for jobs.

@KenMueller It's true. I give this advice to young professionals all the time, but they somehow think they're different. Not the case. We're looking for clues that someone would already fit our culture...and being able to consistently blog is part of that.

@ginidietrich  @KenMueller I am no longer a young professional, but I feel plenty wet behind the ears as I try to acclimate to the brave new world of social media. For whatever reason, your comments about personal blogging just clicked with me in a way others haven't. I may finally be ready to dip my big toe into shallow end of the baby pool. But first I have to buy my water wings ....

@magriebler  @ginidietrich  @KenMueller You should totally start a blog! You can always start blogging "privately" and then when you have some content you feel comfortable with, your About Me section setup ... jump in the deep end and go LIVE. That might help you ease into it.
