Gin and Topics: Boobs and Wind-Blown Ducks

I cannot tell you how happy I am that today is here. I’ve had a month of travel that nearly made me fold myself into the fetal position and cry like a baby. But I made it and am very much looking forward to a short week next week.

It’s my favorite time of the year! I get to cook and put up my tree and decorate my house and read and write and run (too cold to ride) and sleep in and stay in my running clothes all day if I want. Yay for the holidays!

Oh. I’m sorry for those of you who don’t have Thanksgiving next week. The darn Canadians celebrate it way too early. I’ll be sure and make something a little extra for those of you who are working next week.

In the meantime, have a little Gin and Topics.

5. Ducks Blown Off Feet. Let’s start out with the cuteness factor. Thanks to Ken Mueller for sending me this video of baby ducks being blown off their feet by the wind. It’s a true testament to a mother’s love.

4. Craziest Deposition Ever. I don’t know if anything I can say will do this justice. My friend Deb Dobson sent me this link and, well, you just have to read it for yourself. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

3. Small Business Social Media Study. This is an interesting study. It shows that, even though 88 percent of small business owners understand social media can affect the growth of their companies, and even have a social presence, 67 percent won’t invest in it in 2012.

2. Microsoft Socl. Well, here’s something new. Microsoft is “quietly” creating a social network to compete with Google+ and Facebook. Is Apple going to have a social network, too? This might be too much. Admittedly they do claim it’s a research project and may never be released publicly, but it’ll be interesting to see if they’re just saying that to stave off the dogs.

1. Diaspora Co-Founder Passes Away. And, not to end on a sad note, but I’m ending on a sad note. The co-founder of Diaspora, the social network that promises to protect your privacy, committed suicide this past weekend. Typically this isn’t something I’d include here, but I think it’s important for all of us to think about the online friends we have and the kinds of perceptions we have about them. Add to that the extra pressure VC-backed business owners are facing and we really need to keep an eye on our friends and not take things at face value. Go tell someone you love them. Right now!

There will not be a Gin and Topics next Friday…we’re taking the holiday weekend off. So, for my friends in the States, have a very happy Thanksgiving. Please don’t hurt yourselves shopping on Black Friday. I’ll be snuggled on my couch reading.

    The important question here is…

    Will Microsoft Socl come embedded with Blue Screen of Death

    Will Microsoft Socl require a reboot between posts?

    Will Microsoft Socl be open to more viruses than the Apple version?

    Ha! And I’m first. Peace

    • ginidietrich

      @danielnewmanUV LOL! Very funny questions! Especially because I experienced the blue screen of death WHILE I was speaking earlier this week.

    • @danielnewmanUV Actually, the network will just go down 5 times a day while it downloads and installs updates. 🙂

  • debdobson62

    I so love the duck video. How sweet is that, and wasn’t that some deposition! Thanks for including it my friend.

    • ginidietrich

      @debdobson62 I couldn’t decide if I should put the real title in the blog post. I just didn’t want to ruin it for anyone.

  • ginidietrich

    @KatyWrites LOL! G&Ts all around!

  • ginidietrich

    @Egehead LOL! That deposition made me laugh.

  • Wow, that social media study IS fascinating. Thanks for sharing it. On the bright side, many of the reasons business owners listed for not investing in social media are very solvable. I choose to see it as an opportunity. Happy Thanksgiving!

    • ginidietrich

      @makammerer I look at it as an opportunity, too. We’re so optimistic.

  • Poor ducks — glad the mom corralled them all in the end. Happy Friday!

    • ginidietrich

      @adamtoporek Wasn’t it funny how they were being bounced around?!

  • But as to number 3 most small businesses do not need social media in the sense for marketing to customers. Dry Cleaners? Car mechanic? There is a long list of small business types that won’t impact their customer growth directly from being on Twitter or Facebook. But they can use it for networking. Or some customer service. But if we are unhappy with the car repairs would you post on Joes Garage facebook page or call him directly or drive in?

    Anyway hope this loads because it proves they aren’t investing http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/155015/

    • ginidietrich

      @HowieSPM I don’t agree. There are LOTS of small businesses that can benefit. They should be using Yelp and Google Places and other tools, as well. I think, as the younger generations begin buying, they will absolutely post on Joe’s Garage FB page vs. calling him directly.

    I was very concerned that the ducks video was going to have a unhappy ending. I would have caused me to unleash a furry of fussiness, but alas, it ended just fine.

    The disposition was okay.

    I haven’t tried Disporia, but that news saddened me nonetheless.

    I would like to offer a HUGE preemtive HUG to anyone who needs it.

      @ExtremelyAvg I would never post anything that had a sad ending with animals! I promise.

      I’ll take a hug. Just because.

  • I once suffered through a deposition like that where I was picked upon for what people could see. It was shocking, shameful and distasteful. The worst part was that I didn’t even get asked out. Really, what is a guy supposed to do to get a date.

    • ginidietrich

      @TheJackB You kill me! LOL!!

  • ginidietrich

    @mdbarber Cute, huh??

    • mdbarber

      @ginidietrich the ducks were amazing! Poor little things. Was that Chicago?

      • ginidietrich

        @mdbarber I don’t know where it was

        • mdbarber

          @ginidietrich it was terribly cute. Hope you have a good weekend.

        • ginidietrich

          @mdbarber You do the same!

  • I love you; and not to change the subject, but does a vegan turkey look like a turkey?

    Thanksgiving is a cool week because it’s always going to be on Thursday and you will have a 4-day weekend and not have it showing up on Tues or Wed and not knowing how many days to take off…..sheesh……

    When anyone takes their life or leaves us suddenly it seems to leave a hole or void for awhile that I don’t know if you ever fully fill it even after the passage of time. I attended 3 funerals in a 7 day span last week; all 3 were almost like a reunion and I saw so many people I had not done a good job of staying in touch with. I vowed then to do a better job of reaching out because the clock is ticking and we don’t know when the alarm is going to go off.

    Hope you have a great weekend.

    • ginidietrich

      @bdorman264 I eat the sides…everyone else eats the turkey. Of course, I’ve been traveling the entire month of November so I haven’t even thought about buying my turkey yet. I better get it before they’re all gone!

      Three funerals in one week?! You’re not THAT old.

      • @ginidietrich It was parents of friends, so whatever age that starts happening, looks like I’m there………….

        I’ll bet you cook a mean turkey; better hurry up and get it so it can thaw out, right? What time do you want me to stop by?

        • ginidietrich

          @bdorman264 Stop by around 2:00. I make the turkey with champagne. You’ll like it.

        • @ginidietrich@bdorman264 Me too please. Since we Canadians have already had our (too early) Thanksgiving! Enjoy:)

  • JakeMoore

    I didn’t read the article, but that video was hilarious.

    • ginidietrich

      @JakeMoore The poor baby ducks!

  • Well, you’ve covered the full

  • KatSKrieger

    @ginidietrich That duck video cracked me up the first time I saw it. Stumbled on it a ways back showing the toddler animal vids. 🙂

  • Gertie, I caught your dig, you wimp!

    • ginidietrich

      @faybiz Do not make me fly down there and beat you!

      • @ginidietrich at least I don’t have to worry about you biking down eh?

  • I love the ducks and feel bad for them at the same time. Yeah, I am here for the ducks!

    • ginidietrich

      @hackmanj We’re all here for the ducks. And to see how nice the blog looks!

      • @ginidietrich you know what’s really cool? The way livefyre works it posted that comment to both sites… No comments were lost or harmed in the moving of the ducks and other spin sucks topics 🙂

  • Love the ducks:)

    • ginidietrich

      @KDillabough Wasn’t that funny?!

      • @ginidietrich My little heart was breaking a bit until I saw that they rebounded like little cotton balls:)

  • The excellent mediabistro article on small biz is exactly what I’m up against most of the time. I’ve started to really despise the hype around shiny objects … er, new social media tools. That stuff just contributes to the overload and makes it even harder for people to focus on the real value.

    A little while ago it was QR codes this and that, before that it was twitter, now it seems to be a wide range of local curation & comment sites. Very few people are addressing small biz owners directly with what they need.

    I used to think this was an opening for me as the one level headed truth teller out there, but it’s hard to be heard in the roar of the hype. Shiny object! Shiny Object! whOOOoooooh!

    • ginidietrich

      @wabbitoid Hey look over there!

  • Are the social networks playing chicken with us? If so, I give. Barely had the tolerance to give G_ the old college try. I did and don’t regret it, but at some point, I have to surrender. Until after the holidays at LEAST, my point is now. Sorry Microsoft…

    Okay, I’m not sorry. But still.

    • @Tinu you are suffering from new social media network fatigue. 🙂 I think we all are. I rarely use Google+ unless someone mentions me. I did use it a lot when it came out. I like the hangout feature and still use it when applicable. I will try the Microsoft one, and any other contender that steps up to the plate but only because I enjoy the process and “you never know”.

      • ginidietrich

        @hackmanj@Tinu The Microsoft one is being used internally. They may never launch it. But, I agree…if they do launch it, Lord help us all.

  • no thanksgiving for me here (in Oman). That’s the bed news…

    The good news that Thursday is the weekend anyway, Black Friday will become Golden Friday as the sun is shining every day and in celebration of their 41st National Day – every has just been given Sat/Sun/Mon off – it’s a 5 day weekend!!! – ow THAT’s the way to celebrate Thanksgiving…..

    • ginidietrich

      @Nic_Cartwright Five day weekend?! FIVE DAYS?? Now I’m jealous.

  • I’m going to get Anonymous to take over this blog next Friday. #thatisall
