Gin and Topics: Rich People Shoplift and Look Better Instantly

It snowed! It snowed! It snowed!

We got TEN glorious inches! I’m so happy. Now the cross-country skis I got for my birthday last year (11 months ago) can finally come out of their wrapping and go for a spin on the lakefront.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

I know that has nothing to do with Gin and Topics, but I’m so excited. I’ll tone it down now and bring you the top five stories and videos of the week.

5. Walgreens Turns to Paid Bloggers. If you haven’t been following the PR nightmare that Walgreens has created for itself while publicly debating Express Scripts, it’s a good lesson in what not to do. Not only are they fighting online, and very publicly, they’re paying bloggers and tweeters to promote them. It’s all-around bad.

4. Who’s Your Favorite? This was making the rounds on Facebook so you may have already seen (though I know Howie Goldfarb has not), but it is hilarious. Or, as Lisa Gerber and my sister-in-law say, H-I-LARIOUS. It’s a dad asking his daughter who her favorite is – him or mum. Thanks to Hajra Khatoon for making sure I saw it!

3. Beauty Secret of the Stars. Earlier this week, my February issue of InStyle arrived. I looked at the cover and it took me a minute to figure out who it was. The celebrity is so photoshopped you barely recognize her. And then Michael Schechter sent me this video. FINALLY we have a way to not exercise, eat right, or get old…and still look amazing!

2. World’s Coolest Flight Attendant. Ken Mueller sent me this and it’s just awesome.

1. Why Do Rich People Shoplift? I’m kind of astounded by this. Apparently rich people shoplift because it gives them a rush. A rush they’re immune to at work. Seriously. You can’t make this stuff up.

In regards to the Walgreen's/express scripts fiasco, there are more than a couple drugstores and grocery stores that are not only accepting express scripts but they are advertising that they do. Apparently, Walgreen's didn't factor in the huge segment of the population that uses this company nor did they accurately predict the fallout from it and the competitors waiting in the wings.

As always, your gin and topics column is one of my only guilty pleasures that I spend reading while working.

Well thanks for informing us about the top 5 stories of the week Gini. Love the point 1 that is why do rich people shoplift. One thing I learned before I became a bestselling author and long before Inc Magazine voted my company as one of the fastest growing companies is that your post are always amazing and the videos too. I also like your video of beauty secret of stars.

The "who's your favourite" is my fave:) And the A doh bay proves that truth is stranger than fiction. Just voted on the G2 logo. Great stuff, snow bunny!

I was curious about the BBC article on shoplifting, so I read it, but my take away also includes the idea that it's a response to some sort of loss, and a need to fill a void. While for some people it may be about being addicted to the thrill of getting away with something, for others it's more complicated. And like most shame-based behavior, I'm sure it's not a compulsion anyone enjoys.

Fun post, Gini - thank you.

- ps - I've also read that the more affluent you are, the more likely you are to re-gift! ;)

@susanborst Shut up! Really?!? I wonder what the psychology behind that is? So weird.

@ginidietrich@susanborst Because you probably GET better gifts and have too much crap as it is. I am the anti-hoarder; I love re-gifting and don't mind being the re-gifted.

@ginidietrich@susanborst Believe me, I have studied psychology for 5 years and I might just have to do another year to study rich people. Or maybe we can put it on pure logic; the richer you are, the more likely you get invited to conferences, seminars, gathering where you don't really know what to do, the more you get gifted weird souvenirs or gift bags; and because you are rich, you don't know what to do with so many of them and you just re - gift them to other "poor people". I have a rich aunt (stinking rich) and all of her gifts are hand downs from what she received at a "conference, seminar,....." Rich people are weird. Period. why do you think I ain't rich ;)

@ginidietrich That's how I keep convincing myself... I am not rich... damn, but WTH I ain't weird too :)

You had me at Gin and Topics! Yeah I'm new here, but you already hooked me with this column. I'm also new to the blogosphere, so I took a crash course by vowing to read all of Schaefer's posts in 2011. After seeing you mentioned there for the bazillionth time, I just had to click on your name. Very happy I did :) Have fun with your new(er) Ski's!!

@TonyBennett LOL! Only a bazillion times? I'll have to have a talk with him! This silly stuff is only reserved for Friday afternoon so I hope you'll stop back by during the week. Meet some of the crazies in the comments. It's worth your time.

@ginidietrich Oh yes, I'm looking forward to the commenting crazies! I noticed the Friday trend as I read a year's worth of your posts, too... But admittedly, it was just 2012 :) I'll be around

The mum bit was pretty darn funny. I started LOL'ing. The rich people shoplift just makes you want to punch someone.
