Top 10 Guest Blog Posts of 2011

By: Arment Dietrich | January 4, 2012 |

Today’s guest post is written by Lisa Gerber.

Ladies and gentlemen, you have spoken.

Your clicks have told us your favorite guest blog posts for 2011 and we have compiled the Top 10 here for your review, and, for 10 of you, for your bragging rights.

We started working with guest bloggers on Spin Sucks around the middle of 2010 for a few reasons: To involve the community, broaden the expertise offered here, grow beyond Gini Dietrich, and increase engagement and traffic.

We think it worked, and we all had some fun along the way. Our guest bloggers have become an important part of our community, and we wanted to dedicate today to you guys by sharing this list, based on pageviews.

Some of you, remarkably, didn’t make the top 10 list despite winning for top number of comments, cough, Michael Schechter, cough. I’m also shocked the hardest working guest blogger (aka Jayme Soulati) didn’t make it despite resorting to creative tactics such as blogjacking others’ posts for traffic.

I should also add, much like the Canadian hockey players born in January, the advantage for this Top 10 List clearly goes to those who blog in the earlier part of the year. No one who guest blogged for us in December made this list. However, Adriel Hampton’s post  from mid-November made it so it can be done!

Drumroll, please…

The Top 10 Guest Blogs on Spin Sucks for 2011

  1. Three Reasons Twitter Is Beginning to Suck by Kary Delaria (June 14)
  2. Twelve Steps to Creating QR Code Campaigns by Stephanie True Moss (May 23)
  3. Five Tips for Business Success on Yelp by Jay Pinkert. (April 14)
  4. Four Social Media Questions (and Answers) by our very own Molli Megasko. (May 25)
  5. Twitter Lists: List Me Baby One More Time by Adriel Hampton (November 14)
  6. Maker’s Mark Hires Jimmy Fallon and #FAILS by Adam Zuckerman  (June 8)
  7. Seven Ways to Turn Employees into Brand Ambassadors by Amber Avines (September 15)
  8. Five Reasons the Intern Shouldn’t Run Social Media by Andrew Hanelly (June 16)
  9. You’re Using Twitter Wrong by Aaron Lee (April 21)
  10. Does the Great Gatsby Live on Empire Avenue? By Geoff Livingston (June 23)

You know what else this list tells me? You like numbers. And booze.

To all of our guest bloggers, we’d like to extend a huge thank you. It’s not all about the numbers, but you know us, we like a little competition. Who knows, maybe we’ll do a June list for the prior 12 months to give everyone a chance.

What was your favorite?

Yay Amber; rock and roll. I guess everybody else was playing for second, huh?

Good list Lisa, I didn’t see a single ne’r do well on this one; good way to start the year.

  2. MSchechter says:

I knew I should have blog jacked my comment fix… 🙂 Great list. Kind of funny to see how Empire Avenue was such a thing and is now almost irrelevant. Something to aim for in 2012!

Do we also get a look at Gini’s top 10? That’d be fun!

  3. ginidietrich says:

You know what is so funny? I’m reading this last night and I’m thinking, “I need to email Lisa and say, ‘Whoa. Lists are popular.'” And then you said it at the end. With booze. I was dying! HAHAHAH!

    • ginidietrich says:

P.S. What the heck happened to the date on #6??

    • KenMueller says:

@ginidietrich It’s funny, I always avoided lists early on. In my mind they smacked of spam emails, like “Top 10 Ways to get Rich Fast”. But then I read quite a few blog posts about blogging, saying that people DO like lists. So I tried them, and when I look at my stats, they are among the most popular posts.

  4. TheJackB says:

I rather enjoyed the post about Groucho Marx and community. I hear nothing but good things about the author being clever, handsome and exceptionally humble.

  5. KenMueller says:

Of this list, I think 4, 7,8, and 9 were my favorites.

  6. KaryD says:

@lisagerber *blush* Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  7. KaryD says:

Thanks, @ginidietrich and @Lisa Gerber for letting me ruffle some feathers. I’ve enjoyed writing over here and am certainly in some mighty fine company.

  8. Petya says:

My definite “number one guest post at Spin Sucks” is number 8: Five reasons the intern shouldn’t run social media. Wasn’t this one of the very first mistakes that some companies did. Because of underestimating the power of real-time communication with real people.

  9. hanelly says:

This is the best company I’ve been in since the KISS reunion tour! Thanks for letting me post on this fine site.

  10. AskAaronLee says:

Amazing list Lisa, it just made my day that my guest post was #9. Doesn’t that also mean we all get hugs and presents from Gini?

  11. MolliMegasko says:

    I made number four! YES!

  12. MattLaCasse says:

My favorite was Matt LaCasse’s post about the Twitter redesign. His agent also tells me he’s incredibly upset about being left off this list. Been crying in the shower all day.

  13. kbkcomm says:

“You like numbers. And booze.”LOL RT @ginidietrich: Stick through to the end. It’ll make you laugh a post by @lisagerber

  14. 3HatsComm says:

I remember some of these, esp. @KaryD and @hanelly posts, though I’m surprised @Soulati didn’t crack the Top 10, blogjack comments and all. And FWIW, I totally love booze. 🙂

  15. Soulati | PR says:

Oh, for pity’s sake. That’s got to be my phrase of the day; have now used it twice. Just sayin’ those crappy five things, 10 tips, 4 bubbles, and other seemingly meaningless banter shouldn’t be winners. (No disrespect meant.)

What I’m trying to whine about is that this was definitely Nate rigged. Because I strove (that’s a word, right?) to earn more than 140 comments (yes, blogjacking is acceptable because it was my, uhmm, ballsy creation), that should be the metric (oooh, I used that word which will soon go away like “personal brand.”) to determine the whiner, I mean winner.

  16. lisagerber says:

@adrielhampton you rocked it! Late November too! 🙂

  17. wordsdonewrite says:

@bdorman264 Woo hoo! Thanks for the heads up, Bill!

  18. DannyBrown says:

Bollocks. I’m never guest posting again. That wine bribe was clearly misplaced.

  19. Woo hoo! Thanks so much for the invitation to write for Spin Sucks. It was an honor 😉

  20. 24k says:

@wordsdonewrite Congrats on your top blog poster of 2011 honor from @ginidietrich.

  21. Soulati | PR says:

Hey, michael schechter I’m not going to page two to find your challenge; it’s right here on top for all the world to see — bring it dude…I’m all in…and I’m a mighty good fighter, but your words might hurt worse. POTGFC

  22. jeanniecw says:

I’m with @DannyBrown . Bullocks. My next guest post will clearly be titled “The 10 Best Things About Drinking With Gini While Discussing Why Social Media Sucks.”

  23. truemc says:

#2 Awesome! Thanks @ginidietrich for the opportunity to guest post for SpinSucks! I’m honored to be on the list & among such fine company.

  24. lisagerber says:
