There are times I think about my career and it feels like I’ve only been doing this for 10 years or so.
(Not to mention that when I look in the mirror, I want to see my 27-year-old self looking back.)
But never has it been more apparent that it’s been much, much longer than that than while chatting with today’s guest, Gerry Corbett, about how far the industry has come, particularly in the past few years.
We talk about the big, green Bacon’s books, getting client approvals by fax, and entering the PR industry when there were only a few universities offering it as a degree.
We also talk about Gerry’s beginnings which, surprisingly, were not in PR and the story of how he got here is fascinating.
Not only is he an extraordinarily experienced communicator, he is a former PRSA (national) Chair and CEO, he’s APR certified, and he’s a Fellow.
You’ll enjoy spending a few minutes with him.
The Spin Sucks Inquisition
I asked Gerry the normal questions (which you can find below):
- Tell us who you are and what you do.
- What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in the past six months?
- What is one of the biggest trends you’ll be using this year?
- What is one thing about yourself that would surprise most people?
- What is the best book you’ve read in the last six months?
- What is your latest Netflix binge?
- The Five Second Rule.
- Where can people find you online?

And now the floor is yours. Say hello to Gerry!
What a fun inquisition! And another member of the “Netflix?” club. I was admittedly multitasking while listening but Gerry you had me at NASA. And I can’t wait for the “best of” compilation!!
You notice I say I’ve learned to ask first if they have Netflix?!
Yes. And I may have an overinflated sense of being fully responsible for that.
As you should…
“It’s sad that the corporate world has gotten to the point where people are just commodities” –> couldn’t agree more! Great inquisition!
Pleasure meeting you Gerry, nice to meet another photography geek in the Spin Sucks community.
What a wonderful and candid conversation with this former Chicagoan who (for some reason) decided the climate is better in the Bay Area. I met Gerry through PRSA and had the honor of featuring him (along with other bright stars in the public relations constellation) in my blog.
You know all the cool people
What a fun time. The Inquisition is an extemporaneous adventure filled with daring and danger. Gini is a delight to gab with and Laura is a trap waiting to be snared by. Thank you Gini and Laura. Also thank you to the Inquisition’s loyal subscribers and commenters who add flavor to the stew.
